Oh boy, I have thoughts alright and none of them are particularly good ones. It's one of the worst fandom subreddits I have ever seen. Good fanart that would easily net over a thousand upvotes on most fandom subs struggles to get into the low hundreds at best. Meanwhile, low effort spam and engagement bait thrives and makes the front page on a nearly daily basis.

The moderation is incompetent and lazy, letting the aforementioned spam thrive and doing nothing to remove it or ban the users responsible for it. Posts that have almost nothing to do with TD and are mostly about Pokemon or Ben 10 or some other franchise are left up. Most subs would remove such posts for being off topic, but on the Total Drama subreddit anything goes I guess.

In the comments section you'll find a bunch of people who repeat the same few popular opinions and who hate to have any sort of productive discussion about the show. Never before have I met fans so utterly allergic to creativity or nuance.

And the most nightmarish part about it is that it's one of the better platforms to engage with Total Drama fans on. For all the shit I've talked about the r/TotalDrama, it's the cream of the crop. The youtube scene is a stale wasteland of the same bland opinions as the reddit but with somehow even less variety, and Twitter and TikTok are pure unfiltered brainrot.

personal anecdote: i've seen a lesbian axel hc on there, and because hcing a character in a canon het ship as literally anything else is apparently the biggest crime you can commit over there.

that specific post was full of smartasses in the comments like "you're wrong actually cuz what lesbian would want ripper?" and asking OP to defend their other hcs like they're fucking ace attorney

like, i'm not a hc guy personally, but people can hc whatever they want, and people with hcs sure as hell don't have to justify it to a bunch of forum dwelling losers obsessed with being the smartest people in the room.

like two years ago, me and my friend once got harassed in our dms for a week straight by this psycho fan on there when we so much as said we disliked a certain popular character or episode. this person even went onto random comment threads on our reddit profile to ask us “why we hated total drama so much” and “why we didn’t just leave the fandom” if we “hated it so much.” we told the mods about it and they did NOTHING. eventually that person got a panic attack over chase getting eliminated super early in season 2 of the reboot (they were also a chase stan…nuff said) and they made a whole dramatic post over it and how they were leaving the fandom after all the “hate” and to focus on their mental health. uh, more power to you, but me, my friend, and a few other users who also reported the same person harassing them weren’t sending you any hate and didn’t appreciate the open-casket royal service funeral they got in the comments of their “i’m leaving” post. don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

and a few months ago, there was a hate post about priya, one of my FAVORITE characters. i went into the comments and said that “no, i don’t think priya’s a psychotic abuser” or whatever mountain out of a molehill they were making of priya catapulting that boulder at caleb (it was a JOKE. and another thing–that subreddit, and reddit in general, takes comedy and slapstick in cartoons and anime WAY too seriously. not every character is an evil villainous abuser just for punching the pervert character in the face or slapping a dimwitted character upside the head.) anyways, i got a ton of downvotes with no explanation or arguments back, which i didn’t really care about and honestly expected. what bothered me was a well known mod in the subreddit who started arguing with me in the comments about priya being an abuser. things got so heated to the point where they started TRAUMA DUMPING about how their parents slapped them around as a kid, and how i was being “inconsiderate” and “triggering” people for expressing that i still liked priya in season 2, even with her rollercoaster of a relationship with caleb. they eventually removed all of my comments for the rule “uncivil conduct,” but i checked a few hours later, and my comments were back up, so they either UN-removed them because they knew they abused their mod authority or another mod put my comments back up because they knew the mod i argued with was abusing their authority.

either way, insane stans and power hungry mods are commonplace over there. and worst of all is probably the discussions themselves. we’re in a total drama content drought, in case you haven’t noticed, and the only way people on that subreddit are sustaining themselves in this famine is by saying the SAME discussion points over and over again (blah blah blah, we know, you hate sundae muddy sundae. EVERYONE does. can we perhaps have a more interesting opinion for once in our lives?), stealing posts (especially memes, low hanging fruit. and btw, rampant and unchecked meme theft is the tell tale sign of a subreddit thats about to keel over and starve and die from a lack of content), and letting bots repost posts and calling you some sort of party-pooper or “overdramatic”for pointing it out (sorry i don’t want ai slop and clankers infiltrating a fandom space).

If you genuinley believe that 15 years haven't passed in universe and characters from the pre-reboot seasons are still teenagers please, at this point, just be honest and say it's copium for the fact that gen 1 is likely never gonna come back outside of cameos. No, I'm not saying this for weird reasons, I'm saying this because people keep using this "oh it's a cartoon, they don't age" nonsense as an excuse to ship the reboot cast with the characters from old gens. For one, Priya's backstory makes zero sense if 15 years haven't passed in universe. How could she, a teenager, have spent her whole life training for a show if said show has only been around for a couple of years? "But Owen's cameo-" some people's appearances don't change that much overtime. There are adults out there who constantly get mistaken for teens and vice versa. Some people age slowly while others age rapidly, it's seriously a matter of genetics and it's very much possible for someone's appearance to not change much from when they were 16 to when they're 31, it's just rare. "But Terry said-" most showrunners don't interact with their show's fanbases much and we're lucky that Terry is willing to give us a little bit of his time to answer some questions we have. I really think the case there is he hasn't thought about it much and isn't going to waste his time writing a long ass tweet about how time passes in this universe when most showrunners just ignore in depth questions about their show's lore when fans ask them on social media. It really is super simple- Chris says 15 years have passed. Someone who was 16 15 years ago would be 31 today, meaning that all of the gen 1 characters are 31 when the reboot takes place (gens 2 and 3 are also now adults but this is mostly a problem with gen 1 diehards). I shouldn't have to explain why shipping a 16 year old and a 31 year old is wrong but some people just don't really seem to get it
