People are like "Gérard de Villefort is a flawed character" and starting to name his autistic traits
(but okay, most often people just blatantly mischaracterize him but it's still related to being autistic)

I wish I'd get high at least once in my past life. Imagine how easy things would go:
Valentine : father I know you're gonna be mad but I love Max!
Villefort, inhaling Stuffâ„¢: okay, good luck with your new husband
Val: father!.. are you sure?
Villefort: yeah
Val: why are your eyes red?
Villefort, exhaling smoke: tears of joy
Here's a take I want to be able to fully explain once I'm recovered: Villefort's actions aren't justifiable in any way, but Villefort is still innocent.
Villefort: pansexuality is a tiger, and tigers always attack from behind...
D'Avrigny: ...
D'Avrigny: your daughter is dead, wtf are you talking about
What Villefort says: sir, I am pleased to meet you...
What Villefort thinks: fucking shit you know man I'm so pissed right now

In the end Monsieur de Villefort went insane or, to be more precise, it's implied that he had a psychotic breakdown.
My headcanon is that he didn't. In that moment he suffered a very intense flashback.
This is a weird thing to wish, but I want Maximilian/Villefort ship. Wonder how the Count would solve that problem.
Count: so what if there are people dying there?
Max: but I'm in love! Valentine de Villefort ! She has... Such a nice father!
Count: honey, no, this is gross.
Even though I'm often getting cranky about stuff in tcomc, I gotta admit that Dumas used a powerful strategy to ensure survival of this story: he made it appealing to autistic and other ND people. And we're the kind of people to reread the same stuff over and over again and then talk about it endlessly to lure more people into liking it.
