anyways, the lady is very scared of being hurt / trusting others / the world and especially of sound. as a child, the slightest odd, jarring note could send her running to hide and make her stumble over nothing in her fear (see: trying to escape the thin man). as a monster, deranged and lost in the transmissions’ meddling as she was, the loud voice of her best friend made her cower as if he’d struck her. as the lady, the guests had to be hypnotized into a chant of her own design to soothe the chaos of their usual squealing, and the single shattering of a vase in a different room could send her fleeing into the shadows for safety. her, who made playthings of souls and could kill without moving a muscle.
as a child, the only thing that brought her comfort was her music box, which let her forget all her nightmares and troubles and drowned out the terrible sounds of the outside. it made her feel as if she was safe for as long as it was playing. she did not have to think (for she had few thoughts that were close to happy). she did not have to worry about what monster would try to rip her apart next. she just had to listen. even now, her humming and her cute new music box are poor substitutes for the one she first had, back in that little cabin, but they still make her feel happier than anything else, enough to convince herself that hers was a life worth living.
