Articles examining the German photographer August Sander (1876–1964) have been brought together in issue 19 of Tate Papers by Christian Weikop, who co-organised the symposium ‘August Sander and Weimar Germany’, held at the National Galleries of Scotland on 13 May 2011 during the ARTIST ROOMS exhibition August Sander at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Julian's essay "Living in the Long Front" was published by Tate Papers last Fall, and has finally migrated to its HTML form.

The essay offers a history and critical evaluation of ideas put forward by the critic Lawrence Alloway in the late 1950s—in particular, the claims of his 1959 article "The Long Front of Culture."

Next week Tate Papers will publish Julian's essay "Living in the Long Front," as part of a suite of essays prompted by art historian Courtney J. Martin reconsidering the work of the curator and critic Lawrence Alloway. Alloway was a key member of the Independent Group and (by some accounts, not least his own) the one who coined the term "Pop." He's pictured here with a work by the feminist painter Sylvia Sleigh, to whom he was married for thirty years.
