pairing: wade wilson/tony masters
quick one shot/draft i just rlly wanted to share this realll quick!
Leaning in closer, Wade reaches down to undo Taskmasterās belt, Tony doesnāt stop him this time, instead his own hands reach over to hold Wadeās hips, pulling him closer. They hadnāt been alone together in a while, it was exciting for him, reminding Tony of when they were younger and more reckless with each other.Ā
He liked when theyād fight which eventually led to this. Wade leaning into him, hands squeezing his thighs as he unclips his belt, his lips pressing down on his neck. Tonyās eyes close, heās ready for whatās next.Ā
Wadeās breath tickled his ear as he whispered.Ā
āI think you make me a better person.āĀ
Itās not what Tony wanted to hear, putting a complete halt to his arousal. Now heās frustrated and irritated with how Wade will always find the worst time to speak.Ā
Tony tugs the cowl back over his head. Shoving Wade back as he grabbed his belt to clip it back on. āIt was a mistake to do this.ā
āWhat did I do?ā Wade stammered, confused with the sudden shift in his behavior.
āItās what you said.āĀ
āWhatās wrong with what I said? I was praising you.āĀ Ā
Tony shakes his head disapprovingly, walking further from Wade, a hand covering his face.Ā
āSave your gratitude, I donāt want it. Whyād you have to go and ruin this for me?ā
Wadeās insulted, heās not sure what he had done to have made Tony so irritable this time, he was trying to be earnest just once with him and now heās in trouble again.Ā
āYouāre so confusing, I thought youād like to hear how much I appreciate you.ā
āI donāt want to hear you say it like that. Iām not good for you.ā Tony retorted.Ā
Shaking his head, Wade shrugged, unsure where this was going and what he could do to save this from becoming a fight.Ā
āYou are good for me, you have helped me so much with getting my shit together. Making me a better person for Ellie, I thought youād see it my way.ā Wade walks towards him, hoping that Tony wouldnāt run off before he gets the chance to speak.
Tony turned around to face Wade, though it was hard to see the expression, his body did all the talking. Wade could tell that he was serious and defensive.Ā
āNo. I donāt. We aināt good for each other, Wade. Both of us got selfish tendencies and weāre too stubborn to change.ā Tony sharply criticized.Ā
Wadeās eyes narrowed, frowning at his reaction. It felt insulting for Tony to attack his character so quickly. After all heās been doing to change, the last thing he wanted to hear was that Tony, a person he deeply cares for, thinks heās not a good person.Ā
Wade desperately needs to feel like a good person, otherwise what is he doing all of this for if he canāt really change?
āBut⦠Iām trying to do my best. Be a better father, a better person in general. Iām even trying not to be a mercenary anymore. Iām changing.āĀ
Tony marched up to Wade, driving his finger into his chest.Ā
āAnd thatās the problem. You keep saying ya wanna be better, do better but you wonāt cut it, when things get tough you come crawling back to me. And Iām never gonna help you the way you need it, because thatās bad for business Wade, what good are you to me if youāre not a mercenary?ā
These words were beginning to sting in a way that Wade was unfamiliar. Heās heard it all before, of how much he canāt change, how terrible he is, everyoneās lack of faith in him. But to hear it from Tony, with that venomous tone of his, Wade knew that Tony wants to drive in his point. His words are intentionally cruel. He wants to hurt Wade.
āIāll let ya down again and again cuz thatās what I do, itās what Iāve been doing, I sell ya out we fight and then we laugh about it, rinse and repeat. Weāll keep doing this dance til Iām dead.āĀ
Tony laughed weakly, looking to the side, unable to look at Wade. āI donāt even know if you can die.āĀ
Wade feels a lump forming in his throat. Itās getting harder to even breathe. He wants to say something in retaliation, but heās finding trouble with what to say next.Ā
āAnd itās been fun, Iām not gonna pretend it hasn't been. But thatās all we ever were, Wilson. Just fun. And fun donāt last long.ā Tony removes his hand from Wadeās chest. Keeping a space between them, his head tilting to the floor again, itās hard for Tony to face Wade right now. Heās angry, and more importantly, heās ashamed.Ā
āSo yeah, if ya wanna try and better yourself, get it outta yer system, Iāll be here when you relapse. Then we can have fun again. But I aināt gonna be around to watch you fail, my time is too precious to be wasted on that shit.ā Tony leaves the room before giving Wade a chance to respond, as he couldnāt risk staying any longer.Ā
Tonyās not able to relate to Wade anymore. This sudden interest in morality, in bettering oneself after years that heāll never be able to atone for, Taskmaster canāt support. He convinces himself thst Wadeās wasting everyoneās time again. He canāt believe that Wade will ever truly be a good person, and thatās partly because of his own selfish reasons.Ā
He doesnāt want Wade to change and be better, because thatās not who he fell in love with. That complicates their relationship when they no longer are on the same side of things. Wade was an Avenger once, and Tony thought he had lost him then. If heās going to be a better person now, where does that leave Tony? He wouldnāt change for anybody. Not even Wade.
And if Wade thinks that heās somehow making him a better person, then maybe he has changed too.Ā A realization that terrified him more than anything else.
