“I’ve got Death in my last tarot reading. Should I be scared?”
This is one of the most frequent questions people usually asked me. The thirteenth card of the Major Arcans is the one that people fear the most, and I do not blame them. In fact, it has been always considered a bad omen, probably due to the representation itself: a skeleton, sometimes riding a horse, sometimes wielding a sickle, with a less-than-reassuring look. In some decks, the card doesn’t even carry a name, making it ever more scary. No wonder that everyone always freaks out!
Despite what you can get from the surface, Death has actually a deeper meaning that yes, can be frightening, but not in the way you think. To explain better what I mean, I’ll start with a question: what is essentially death?
Death is a transformation. You as an entity stop being a material manifestation and turn into a spiritual one. You leave the world as you know it, and enter a new dimension. Death is the ultimate, biggest, change that a being can experience. Now, changing can be scary. You go through a transformation where all the things that were important before, do not matter anymore. In the logic of the circle of life, this transformation is both the end of everything and the start of something new. And when you start a new path, especially something so definitive as dying is, it’s normal to feel afraid.
So, in the end, it’s not physical death the message this card wants to give you. This not-so.funny skeleton is just there to remind you that changes are inevitable and necessary, most of the time. Sometimes they happen easily, and that’s what the upright reading stands for. Sometimes they are painful and hard to accept, as the reversed meaning suggests. But life is about dynamism, after all. And you can’t spend it all in the same mental and physical place.
You’ve got to move! 💀
