The short answer is, black was a popular color and you really can’t tell unless you have some sort of documentation. By 1918, WW1 was at its end and mourning was on its way out both because pretty much everyone had lost someone and it’s a deeply impractical thing to do in a time of frugality and sacrifice), so by that alone, I’d say it’s probably not. 

Deep mourning is generally easy to tell because it’s devoid of any sparkle and made of a pebbly, matte material called crape:

Also, since just the dress alone didn’t make mourning complete, mourning dresses will often come as a part of a mourning ensemble, complete with a veil (the best rule of thumb I can give when identifying women in mourning in photographs and art is the presence of a veil, it was the biggest mourning signifier out there), parasol, handkerchiefs, anything else a woman would need to make her ensemble complete.

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - Anders hands down. yes. best character in DA. favorite video game character in general (second only to Lucien Lachance lmao).

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) - Tamlen??? that poor fucking idiot

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - Vivienne. love her. Merrill. love her. also, I actually think Gamlen isn’t that bad either. like, I’m not a fan, but he doesn’t deserve all the shit he’s getting from the rest of his family. Architect. Dagna!!!!!!! sir Gilmoure. Riordan <3 <3 <3

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) - an elf from DA2 that appears at the docks in act 2 and says “elf this, elf that. I’ll elf your mother.” respect, sir. AND that templar from Ostagar who is voiced by Adam Howden (who also voices Anders in the second game) because I like that headcanon that it was actually one of the escape attempts, since we can’t see his face through the helmet.

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - Vivienne, Solas, Anders... Branka lol. Cailan, he’s such a fucking labradoodle.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - omg. I don’t know. Alistair, maybe? I love him very much tho.
