Hello, is there a proper way to tell mourning dress from a regular black one? And when exactly did mourning dresses come out of fashion? I have a 1918 day dress that very much evokes the feeling of a mourning one, but I'm not sure. Thank you so much in advance!
The short answer is, black was a popular color and you really canât tell unless you have some sort of documentation. By 1918, WW1 was at its end and mourning was on its way out both because pretty much everyone had lost someone and itâs a deeply impractical thing to do in a time of frugality and sacrifice), so by that alone, Iâd say itâs probably not.Â
Deep mourning is generally easy to tell because itâs devoid of any sparkle and made of a pebbly, matte material called crape:
Also, since just the dress alone didnât make mourning complete, mourning dresses will often come as a part of a mourning ensemble, complete with a veil (the best rule of thumb I can give when identifying women in mourning in photographs and art is the presence of a veil, it was the biggest mourning signifier out there), parasol, handkerchiefs, anything else a woman would need to make her ensemble complete.Â
Black was a VERY popular color, and thatâs something that people tend to forget about Victorian fashion. However, the dye used in a lot of black garments is pretty corrosive in the long-term, so as popular as they were, extant black garments tend to be on the rare side. A lot of unscrupulous sellers will take a black garment or hair jewelry and pump up the price by claiming its for mourning, so you really have to be careful.
tarakau replied to your post âGoogle Chromeâs automatic translation feature is trying its best but...â
Hey, Im Czech,if you need any help translating or any other help, hit me up! I run a true vintage store and specialize in the 1920s so I'm not a complete layman
Thank you for the offer! Itâs ok though, the website does have an English option, but I havenât got the money to spare for fancy shoes right now so was just looking. And once chrome translated the website automatically I went to more listings just to see if they translated to funny stuff too.

LIVING TOGETHER AU | John&Vlad edition
This silly serie of strips are an early christmas gift for @tarakau , featuring her jackass OC John and my stupid son Vlad, of course heavily inspired by Garfield strips. Itâs just when you find a perfectly fitting strip for your kids and just gotta redraw it..and there you keep finding more and more. The situation in postapo Living Together AU is a goddamn mess - what else when you put two guys who completely despite eachother (and want to kill eachother 24/7) under one roof. Good thing they have their girls around but still... nice backstabbing happy wasteland family itâs a fckin mess.
I've been following you shortly and we don't talk but strawberry lemonade, meadow grass and mahogany

was tagged by @tarakau (whoâs in Anders hell too) to do a Dragon Age version of this. thank you!:*
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - Anders hands down. yes. best character in DA. favorite video game character in general (second only to Lucien Lachance lmao).
scrunkly (my âbabyâ, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) -Â Tamlen??? that poor fucking idiot
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - Vivienne. love her. Merrill. love her. also, I actually think Gamlen isnât that bad either. like, Iâm not a fan, but he doesnât deserve all the shit heâs getting from the rest of his family. Architect. Dagna!!!!!!! sir Gilmoure. Riordan <3 <3 <3
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I wonât shut up about it for a week) - an elf from DA2 that appears at the docks in act 2 and says âelf this, elf that. Iâll elf your mother.â respect, sir. AND that templar from Ostagar who is voiced by Adam Howden (who also voices Anders in the second game) because I like that headcanon that it was actually one of the escape attempts, since we canât see his face through the helmet.
poor little meow meow (âproblematicâ/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - Vivienne, Solas, Anders... Branka lol. Cailan, heâs such a fucking labradoodle.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - omg. I donât know. Alistair, maybe? I love him very much tho.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) - Sebastian and sister Petrice. that snitching bitch from the City Elf origin.
