MLK Pro Bono Dream Lab
This January 20, 2014 during the annual MLK Day of Service, the MLK Pro Bono Dream Lab will empower organizations and community members in Washington, DC to continue advancing Dr. King’s dream. Organized by DC Social Innovation Project, IMPACT, and Taproot Foundation DC, the MLK Pro Bono Dream Lab will bring together skilled volunteers, community members, and local organizations for a day of impact through pro bono service.
Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off”. The MLK Pro Bono Dream Lab will provide a meaningful opportunity for DC-area organizations and individuals to share skills and work together to advance Dr. King’s dream of opportunity for all.
How it will work…
Skilled volunteers will be matched with selected organizations to assist with a pre-defined pro bono project in the areas of design and marketing, human resources, IT, and strategy. Community members interested in launching or growing a community program will be matched with experts in the non-profit sector who will provide advice and guidance.
Community members can sign-up to meet for up to an hour with an expert. Organizations can sign-up for a specific need and work with a skilled volunteer during the event and during the days following the event. Location is TBD.
Five Guiding Principles of Successful Pro Bono Engagement Management
Principle 2: Act like a paying client
If you want your pro bono consultants to treat you like a paying client, begin by treating them as if you were paying. Check in regularly, hold them accountable to meeting deadlines, and give and receive feedback. You'll get far better results.
When this principle is ignored, nonprofit organizations run the risk of not getting what they really need, plus a lot wasted time and resources.

One of the Five Guiding Principles of Successful Pro Bono Engagement Management
Principle 1: Be Prepared to invest time While you may receive the services for free, you should be ready to invest your time and effort. Pro Bono project should be projects that are important but not urgent. A pro bono team needs to learn about your organization so you should be prepared to put in time to introduce new people to your mission. All pro bono projects require an internal team to support the process, even if that team is just you. An internal team should have clearly defined roles for each person and should have established the terms of each person’s participation from the beginning. Track the time you and the pro bono team spend on the project so you can calculate your return on investment. This will help you choose good projects in the future.

TAPROOT LAUNCHES PRO BONO COACHING HELPOUTS
On Monday, November 4th, Google launched Helpouts, a new service that connects people who can give help to people who need help over live video. As an invited partner for the launch, Taproot is offering Pro Bono Coaching Helpouts on topics such as copy editing, branding, website analytics and WordPress. These one-to-one sessions are available for nonprofits to sign up for 30-minute or 1-hour sessions led by Taproot pro bono consultants. This platform extends our Powered by Pro Bono program – where Taproot aims to engage more professionals and nonprofits in quality pro bono engagements for social good.
