Why?

Because, no matter what I’ve seen you take on, you always push forward and come through on top. Nothing ever seems to hold you back, and that in itself takes a lot of guts. So, yeah. 

You make me very proud.

And hey, if it ever gets to be too much, know that I’ll always come find you if you call for me. I’ll be at your side, fast as I can to talk with you about anything that’s bothering you, anytime.

Reaper hated hospitals. 

They brought back such painful memories; memories he had tried to bury deep within him so he would never have to remember the pain he endured when he died.

But you meant more to him than anything in the entire world. He was willing to put aside his hatred and fear if it meant he could see you in your final moments. You both knew that you didn’t have much time left; he could see it in your face, in your movements, in the slow-fading light that was leaving your eyes. 

He walked into your room, his heart wrenching as he looked at you and the feeble smile you managed to give him. “Hey, y/n.” 

“Hi Gabe.” Your voice was weak. He sat beside you and took your hand, his grip gentle but firm. 

“How are you feeling today?” 

“I’m feeling a bit better.” You said with a small smile, feeling a twinge of pain in your chest. “Definitely felt better, though.” 

Reaper nodded, pulling off his gloves. He took your hand again, his other hand stroking your cheek as you spoke. 

You looked down at both of your hands, hesitating slightly. Reaper noticed your hesitation and gripped your hand a little tighter to urge you to speak. But you didn’t. 

Reaper sat back in his chair and watched you. Neither of you said anything for quite a while, until a nurse came in and offered you some food, which you declined. Reaper told the nurse to leave the food and to get out of his sight immediately, which he didn’t have to repeat. “You don’t have to be so cruel to them, Gabriel. They’re doing their job.” 

Gabriel. You hadn’t called him that in quite a long time. 

“Why are you getting so irritated with me.” 

“I’m just a burden to you, aren’t I.” 

You didn’t look at his face. You pulled your hand out of his and put it in your lap instead. 

“What are you talking about. Of course not.” His voice was harsh, and you flinched internally. 

“I mean.. Why wouldn’t I be? You come every day and sit with me for hours when you could be doing so many more important-”

You stopped as a pair of cool lips met your own, tears dripping down your cheeks. Reaper pulled away, and moved into the bed to lie next to you, holding you close to his chest. “You’re the most important thing to me. I would scorch the earth a thousand times if it meant I could see you smile. Now shut up and rest.” 

You both layed in the bed pressed to each other. You fell asleep, your breaths coming quickly and fitfully. Reaper held you through it, knowing you would no longer be in pain soon. The thought brought him comfort. He gently buried his face in your neck after kissing your forehead softly. “I love you. I’ll love you to the day I finally die.” 

He didn’t move. 

He didn’t move when your breathing slowed. 

He didn’t move when the nurses entered your room. 

He didn’t move when the heart monitor began to flatline. 

He held you close, as if he could transfer his energy to you.
