Desmond ran away to chase after rumours of his mother at the age of fifteen because he hated the life of nobility. He wanted challenge, mental stimulation, and excitement, and life in Emeric’s household didn’t provide that. He only found out the truth about his mother being a thief at fourteen, and he thought if he found her, maybe he could find what he wanted from his life.
He follows rumours of the Brotherhood in Cyrodiil, as Emeric has been trying to contain any fallout at the potential of his former Champion being a murderer, and so Desmond heads for the Gold Coast. It’s a long arse journey, and he picks up the basic skills of survival and thievery along the way.
He ends up having a very close call when the Brotherhood suspects he’s a spy sent to try and root them out, and he very narrowly avoids being killed by Tanek when the assassin realises this kid is Maggie’s. He decides not to get involved, this is her mess, but it’ll be interesting to see how things play out. So he sends Desmond off to Abah’s Landing to find Maggie. He doesn’t warn her (obviously) because he wants to surprise her (and not give her time to run and hide).
It’s surprising for almost everyone who knows Maggie that she immediately takes Desmond under her wing and boasts loudly whenever her son accomplishes anything. Tanek asks her why she left him with Emeric if she cared so much about him.
“He could have had better than I did,” she says. “I tried to give him that, he didn’t want it, so there.”
