I think the biggest tragedy about Tamlen is that he probably would have survived the joining had they found him. He retained enough of his humanity to remember and not attack, that's strength and what they look for in wardens.

Two Months of DA Challenge
Topic 1: "I have known loss before."

That encounter with the darkspawn in the camp didn't seem unusual to me at first—it had happened before at one of our overnight stays—but when Tamlen appeared among them, my heart even beat faster in surprise. Throughout the entire game, I didn't expect to see him and thought his vision in the temple would be the only thing I'd encounter. As Mahariel, I put him out of his misery. For me, it's a very tragic story, with many "what ifs." Because it wasn't inevitable, like prequels like Tabris or Cousland. It was a coincidence, perhaps a stupidity, or a tragic accident.
