Being talked over is one of the most painful feelings in this world. It validates our insecurities. It tells us that what we have to say doesnât matter, and that only the words of another person is important. It reinforces the voices of our mental illness and self doubt which tell us that we do not matter.
â©I think itâs important to dissect why it is that other people talk over each other.â©
Many people find themselves unable to be heard in other situations. Be it with their other friends, coworkers, family members or significant other. So when these people meet a âlistenerâ they become ecstatic. This means that they can finally be heard. This means that they can feel like they matter.â©The trouble comes when you are always the listener and never allow yourself to speak.
â©You like to be the listener.â©You like to make people feel heard. To look them in the eyes as they speak. To see their expression alter with their words, their body language adjust with their spoken confidence and their smile grow wide as they see they have your entire attention.â©But it hurts to be the listener
â©You try to speak and it is ignoredâ©You realized that when your words are acknowledged, they are brushed over, quickly nodded at and the conversation continues as though youâd said nothing. Or, your words are heard and loosely wrapped into something else they want to talk about. But at least they acknowledged you spoke a little more than before, so maybe you feel a little less shitty about it. Whatâs worse though? Someone obviously not caring, or someone having the audacity to pretend they care?
â©So you stop yourself from speaking more and moreâ©Until you finally realizeâ©They donât careâ©It doesnât matter what you sayâ©You begin to tell yourself that your words donât matterâ©That you donât matterâ©Youâre just a stock character in their lifeâ©A nice little addition when they wish to be heard.â©Thatâs all youâre good forâ©Or so you tell yourselfâ©â©So how do you fix this problem?â©Befriend listeners.â©
