Michaela beamed, and it was a funny thing, the way the very essence of a person so bright, so quick, could suddenly slow. Everything was slow.
Or: Francesca seeks refuge from a party at the bench of a pianoforte. Michaela finds her.

It's embarrassing how long it took me to answer this, but here we are! (For those not in the know, I asked for Theloise ficlet prompts back in August 2024 and uh. did not fulfill them all in August 2024.)
I hope you enjoy this, anon. Thank you for your patience!
This ficlet is also available on AO3!
âUgh,â muttered Eloise, contemplating the gloopy potatoes in front of her with extreme distaste. She tried at a bite one more time before finally letting the spoon fall and clatter against the plate.
Theo, sat where he was in a chair by her bedside, looked up from his phone and laughed. Everything about the situation was so Eloise: the complaining about the food, the awkward way she hunched over in the hospital bed, the fact that she had fallen out of a tree after a dare from her brother. âNot good enough for you, Miss Bridgerton? Should we bring in the royal chefs?â
When he met Eloiseâs eyes, he found them sparkling with her usual brand of wry confidence. âI can have you removed any time I like, you know,â she said primly, casting her eyes at the large red button on the bedside table. âThen youâll be at the mercy of the nurses.â
âWell, I support the NHS. Iâm sure theyâll love meâalmost as much as you do,â he added clumsily. Shit. Whyâd he say that? It was just a joke, he reassured himself. She can take a joke.
âHa, ha,â Eloise said, but she had twisted around in the bed so that she was no longer facing him. She was rummaging in her rucksack. Probably for a book; yes, it was.
Theo half-rose out of his chair. âWell, if thatâs all, I guess I should lââ
A hand shot out and grasped his wrist, holding him in place. âI didnât actually tell you to leave.â
âYou didnât tell me to stay, either,â he replied. He had intended to teaseâhe couldnât help himselfâbut nevertheless winced as he heard the unintended note of longing in his own voice.
âAlright,â conceded Eloise, letting him go and settling back against her pillow. âStay.â
It's not pall mall, but I hope you enjoy this ficlet nonetheless, @brynnne! Thank you so much for your patience while my life spiraled into insanity and I lost the will for anything creative đ

Everything was a game, to Eloise. Everything was a competition. Theo knew this like he knew the cool metal of the press against his palm, like he knew the rough hew of every board in their flat, like he knew the weight of her words on a page.
Apparently it was an inherited trait.
âCheat,â the Viscount hissed, snatching up the card from where it lay on the table.
Opposite him, Hyacinthâs face glowed red. âI am not.â
âAnthony, calm yourself. It is only a game,â the Viscountessâthe younger oneâsoothed, pressing a hand to her husbandâs shoulder.
He leant back, some of the tension draining from his posture. âAs I recall, you called me a âbuffoonâ last week when you narrowly beat me at chess.â He took care to enunciate narrowly but rushed through beat, as though the very concept was an offence.
âI was right, wasnât I?â she responded, the set of her smile proud and pleased. Like Eloiseâs, he realized, even with no blood relation.
The others clustered around the table met her joke with appreciative laughter, their jocularity drawing everything and everyone tight together here in the center of the drawing room.
Beside him, Eloiseâs leg trembled faintly, harmonising.
âWhat do you think?â she asked, pitching her voice low so only he could hear.
For a moment they were eighteen again. She was offering him a speech written in her own hand, the set of her mouth firm as she looked past him, as though she expected to be teased for caring at all. The contours of her jaw and the fill of her cheek betrayed her present age, but yes, there was that version of herâit was in Eloiseâs hands, twisting in her lap; it was in her gaze, as intense as ever, even as she failed to meet his eye.
What was new was the ring that sat on her fourth finger and glinted in the sunlight. What was new was Theo next to her in the drawing room of Aubrey Hall, still a little dazed, incrediblyâmiraculouslyâwelcomed into the fold. What was new was sitting here, beside Eloise, and having almost everything he had ever wantedâfor himself, for her, for them together.
He nodded toward the scene in front of them, at the game still being played out. âOur turn next?â he said simply; it was half-question and half-statement.
The brilliance of her grin then could last him the rest of his lifeânot that it had to.
"[Eloise] looked into the carriage at Hyacinth and raised her eyebrows, jerking her head in the direction of the building behind her. The facade was built of faded stone. It seemed to pulse with energy, or life, or something else that Hyacinth could not define, but the effect was thrilling and novel all the same. âWell? Are you coming?â
A challenge. Hyacinth was very good at challenges. She hopped down from the carriage and followed her sister into the fray.â
Or: the incomparable Hyacinth Bridgerton resolves to eavesdrop, meets her sisterâsâŠfriend, and learns about feminism. In that order.

INTERVIEWER:Â [offscreen] Excuse me. Are you a couple?
[The two turn toward the camera, startled.]
WOMAN:Â What? Why?
INTERVIEWER:Â If you are, weâd like to know how you met.
WOMAN:Â [blinking, as if surprised] Oh. Well.
Modern-day Theloise are stopped on the street and asked to share the story of how they met. Now available to read on AO3!
"It's not a double date. We're just third and fourth wheeling"
Thank you so much for the clever, creative prompt! I had a lot of fun writing it, and I hope you'll enjoy reading it just as much.
(Edit: approximately two minutes after posting this, I realized that I misread the prompt by a few letters. Apologies, Anon!)
This ficlet is also available on AO3!
âIt wasnât a double date. We were just⊠third and fourth wheeling.â
Cressida, sitting on the edge of Eloiseâs bed, raised one perfectly-manicured eyebrow.
Feeling compelled to explain herself, Eloise waved her hands in the air, only bringing them down to her side when her packet of crisps went flying. She bent to pick it up again, face suddenly hot. âBen asked me to dinner with his girl of the week and I brought Theo along to keep myself sane. Itâs not my fault my brother is always fucking insufferable with his dates.â
âBut you went home together? And arenât you meant to go to Waterstones with him tomorrow?â
Cressida exhaled (it might have been a laughâit was always hard to tell with her) and went back to reading her magazine, entirely composed. She had a knack for that sort of prim self-possession, where even the way she held herself could convey her most stringent disapproval. It was a quality Eloise envied.
âHowâs Rupert?â
The question had the intended effect; Cressida snapped to attention and rolled her eyes at the reference to the latest in a long line of boyfriends nudged toward her by Mummy and Daddy. âHe decided he didnât approve of my âoverly masculineâ job, so I decided I didnât approve of his presence in my life.â
âIâm sure youâre devastated,â Eloise said drily, crunching down on a crisp.
âNot at all,â Cressida picked up, with the breezy confidence that usually preceded her sharp tongue. âBut in case I need a rebound, I suppose I can⊠third wheel.â
"Are you okay?" (For your prompts! Hope it helps!)
This one was tricky in its own way! I got it in my head that I wanted to write a snippet from canon, so I changed the language of the prompt to sound less modern. I hope thatâs alright!

âAre you well, Miss Bridgerton?â Theo asked, raising his voice so he could be heard above the din of the crowd. It was the third assembly they had attended together, and he had never known her to be so subdued.
âI donât believe that is any of your concern,â she said, words icy.
A momentâs quiet followed her remonstrance; Eloise bent her head to study the crumpled pamphlet she held, so that a curtain of hair fell about her face. âToday is my fatherâs birthday,â she added, in a more conciliatory tone.
âAnd your fatherâs birthday is such a terrible thing?â he teased.
Eloise looked up from her pamphlet.
Glancing away, Theo frowned. Her manner was unnerving. Eloise Bridgertonâlittle that he knew of herâwas not built for staid, distant gazes.
âWell, he died when I was seven.â The briskness of her voice faltered a little when she named her age.
âI see.â
Eloise nodded, appraising him. âDo you?â
He thought of a small, squarish box beneath his motherâs bed, and the shaving kit he hated to use, and felt a pang of bitter kinship.
