A few months ago, while rewatching Stranger Things, I became completely obsessed with Eleven’s “Tales From ’85” jacket. It’s one of those outfits that instantly stands out—bright, bold, and full of personality. The more I noticed it, the more I wanted one of my own, both for cosplay and for everyday wear.

At first, I did what anyone would do and searched online for a replica. That didn’t last long. The prices were far higher than I expected, and the shipping cost was almost painful—sometimes more than half the jacket’s actual price. After staring at my screen for far too long, I decided it just wasn’t worth it.

So I came up with what felt like a much better idea: I’d buy a regular denim jacket and recreate the look myself.

That’s where things got complicated.

Finding a base jacket wasn’t too hard, but once I started looking for accurate “Tales From ’85” designs or patches, I hit a wall. Most replicas didn’t feel right, and the designs I did find were either low quality or unavailable. Eventually, I accepted that if I wanted the jacket to look even close to the one worn by Eleven, I’d have to customize it myself.

Today, I finally bought what I hope is everything I need to start this project. I thought it would be fun to document the process—not only to keep myself motivated, but also to help (or warn) anyone else thinking about doing the same thing. stranger things tales from 85 eleven jacket

The jacket I chose isn’t a perfect match to the one in the show, and honestly, I’m okay with that. Some differences were intentional, and others came down to availability. Thrift shopping doesn’t give you unlimited options, and you work with what you can find. Still, the overall shape and feel are close enough to make it work.

The biggest challenge so far is the lack of clear reference images. While the back design is iconic, there are small details that are surprisingly hard to confirm. I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit pausing episodes, zooming in on screenshots, and comparing fan images just to understand the layout properly.

To avoid overwhelming myself, I’m starting with the most manageable part—getting comfortable with the design process and planning how I’ll recreate the artwork on the jacket. Once that’s done, I’ll move on to refining the details and making it feel as authentic as possible.

So now, I’m settling in for what will probably be a few long days (or weeks) of work. It’s a little intimidating, but also exciting. Wish me luck.
