your dads best friend volunteers to sing at your birthday party...then chooses the one song that somehow says everything he's never allowed to.

Summary: On your 21st birthday, the last person you expected to steal your attention was your dad's best friend, Jensen. But as the night unfolds, hidden feelings, a heartfelt song, and years of unspoken tension make it impossible to ignore the connection that's always been there. Sometimes growing up means taking a chance on the person who's been right in front of you all along.

Today was your birthday, you turned 21, finally a legal adult.
Your dad threw you a big birthday party at home, he had decorated a lot for you, outside was beautifully decorated with string lights, tables for the BBQ, fireplace in the middle where you can sit around and talk with friends, your dad opened the outside bar, where you can finally drink some beer and alcohol. Inside was the cake, candy, and even more drinks, the tables were covered in presents, some birthday decorations throughout the whole living room but everything was mostly outside, since the weather was good. It was a beautiful and fun birthday party, all you've ever dreamed of.
You decided to join your dad and some friends at the fireplace, as you sat down you noticed that he was here too, Jensen, the man who had been way more important lately than you'd ever thought he would. Your dad and Jensen had been best friends since high school, he's been there for you your whole life, you've loved him since you were little, and he did too, but lately, the love has changed. You both still loved each other...just differently than before.
The night had settled into something softer. The loud conversations had turned into comfortable chatter, the fire crackled in front of everyone, and the string lights above cast a warm glow over the backyard.
You were still trying to process the fact that Jensen was here. That he always showed up. That somehow, even in a crowd full of people, your attention always found him first.
Then he reached for something beside him.
A guitar. Your heart immediately quickened.
"Wait... are you actually gonna play?" someone asked, already smiling.
Jensen only shrugged, that familiar little grin appearing on his face.
"Yeah, why not?"
The reactions around the fire grew louder, people encouraging him, but somehow all you could focus on was him.
The way he adjusted the guitar in his hands.
The way his expression changed when he looked down at the strings.
Jensen played a song you'd never heard before.
At first, you tried to simply enjoy it. You listened to the melody, watched the way his fingers moved effortlessly over the strings, watching the way his expression softened as he played.
But then you started noticing the little things.
The way certain moments in the song felt familiar.
The way the emotion behind every note felt almost too personal.
A thought crossed your mind.
No.
That couldn't be possible.
Jensen wouldn't write something like that for you.
Would he?
You almost laughed at yourself for even thinking it. You were letting your imagination get carried away.
But the longer he played, the harder it became to ignore.
It felt like every word he couldn't say was hidden in the music. Every feeling he had kept quiet about was suddenly there, right in front of you.
And the scariest part wasn't the possibility that you were wrong.
It was the possibility that you weren't.
When the song ended, everyone erupted into applause. Jensen smiled, thanking everyone with a small nod, but before he looked away, his eyes found yours.
For a second, neither of you moved.
And somehow, that one look felt louder than the entire song.
Jensen went inside the house to cool down and drink some water, he had just poured his heart out to the person he loved. He grabbed a glass and filled it with water, while leaning against the counter, looking at his glass, he saw you. You followed him inside, you kept telling yourself you only came here to thank him, that you're not gonna try to shoot your shot, but it might also be your only chance. "Thank you, Jensen..." Your voice was quieter than you expected. "That song was beautiful."
Jensen looked up from his glass, "you're welcome, Sweetheart. I'm glad you liked it.", he smiled and answered. "Did you write it yourself?" You asked him, leaning against your kitchen island so you two could face each other, Jensen put his glass down on the counter. For a moment, neither of you said anything. The space between you felt smaller than it had a few seconds ago."yes, i did." He then said, his voice rough, but words gentle. Jensen took a step closer and leaned against the counter, trapping you between his arms, "what was your favourite part?" He asked, suddenly the gentleness in his voice was gone, replaced with something teasing. You swallowed nervously before answering him, you mentioned a part where he was clearly talking about you, just to see if it really was about you. And judging by his reaction, it was.
"You're reading to much into it, Sweetheart." Jensen murmured, his eyes never leaving yours, "am i?" You knew you were testing the waters. So did he. But you couldnโt stop yourself from asking.
The moment was tense, you both knew what was going on, but no one dared to address it. Jensen broke the silence and mumbled while rubbing his temples, "Your dad would kill me if i went out with you." You paused, thinking about what you were going to say, and then you whispered, "He doesn't have to know. Not yet. Besides, I'm an adult now, i can make my own decisions."
Jensen's hand fell from his face to yours, cupping your cheek gently while he held your chin up with two fingers so you're looking at him, you didn't know what he was gonna do, was he gonna ask you if you're sure, maybe he was gonna kiss you, or maybe he was gonna confess, but all you knew is that he got interrupted as someone walked past the kitchen. They didn't see you, but at that moment you realized how badly you could get caught.
"Let's discuss this upstairs." Jensen continued, leaving no room for backtalk. He walked you to your room, making sure no one saw them leave, otherwise people would start asking questions, you could always say there was something you needed to show him in your room, maybe a birthday present, but Jensen knew you weren't the best liar.
As you two walked up the stairs, he kept his hand on your waist, once you were in your room, you locked the door behind you. You didn't know what was going to happen, talking or action. Jensen sat down on your bed, it was a queen sized bed, of course, he chuckled when he saw that. "C'mere, Darling." Jensen chuckled while patting the spot next to him on the bed, inviting you to come sit with him.
As you sat down and looked at him, your eyes met, the room was quiet, a soft hum from the AC, but nothing besides that. The silence was comfortable, nothing like the earlier silence. You wanted to say something, anything, you wanted to confess but you waited, waited for what he was gonna do.
He paused, his eyes searching yours for any sign that you wanted him to stop. When you didn't move away, the corner of his mouth lifted into the smallest smile. "I've been wanting to do this for a while," he admitted quietly. You didn't answer with words. Instead, you closed the distance.
The first kiss was gentle, almost hesitant, as though neither of you wanted to rush what had been building between you. His hand found your waist while yours rested lightly against his chest, and for a moment, the rest of the world disappeared.
When you pulled back, it was only long enough to catch your breath before he smiled and kissed you again, this time with a little more confidence. You couldn't help but smile against his lips, earning a quiet chuckle from him as he drew you closer. Jensen let out a quiet breath, shaking his head with a small laugh. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to do this.", his hand stayed on your cheek. The second kiss lingered a little longer than the first. Whatever hesitation had been between you downstairs had disappeared, replaced by quiet certainty.
Before either of you realized it, you'd shifted closer until you were comfortably settled on his lap, one arm around his shoulders as his rested securely around your waist. The kisses came easier now, broken only by quiet laughter and the occasional smile that neither of you could hide.
Your hips started to move against his, his hands stayed on your waist, slowly guiding you, as your hands stayed around his torso. The kiss became more intimate, all the feelings of holding back for years poured into this. "Tell me when to stop." Jensen breathed out against your lips, you nodded, but you secretly knew that it wasn't going to be necessary.

Best friend's brother
โญโโโโโโเผบ๐เผปโโโโโโโฎ
Summary: You're Colter's best friend and one of the few people he trusts to help him with his cases. But while helping him search for a missing backpacker in Montana, you never expected his brother, Russell Shaw, to become someone so important to you.

You were helping Colter on a case, someone in Montana went missing, apparently he was hiking. A lot of people said he just wanted to disappear, start a new life over, or it was suicide, but his parents were sure it wasn't. His parents hired Colter to search him, and Colter asked you for some help because there was a lot of ground to cover.
You arrived at the destination, Dead Man's Drop, you had to climb a lot, through the forest and up a mountain, the weather was down, it could rain or maybe snow. You parked your car next to Colter's, he too had a trailer clinging to his car where he could sleep anywhere. But there was another trailer, one you didn't know.
You looked over at the unfamiliar trailer again, curiosity getting the better of you. You looked next to you, "Colter?" You asked, but before he could answer, the door of the trailer opened.
A man stepped out, carrying a coffee cup in one hand. At first glance, you could tell he was related to Colter. There was something familiar in the way he carried himself, the same confidence, but there was also something different.
Colter noticed where you were looking and sighed slightly. "That's my brother." Your eyebrows lifted, you've heard a lot about his brother, but you never expected to meet him, and you sure as hell didn't expect him to look so handsome. "Russell." He introduced himself, the man looked over at the two of you, a small smirk appearing on his face.
"Let me guess," he said as he walked closer. "You're the person who keeps my brother from getting himself killed?" You couldn't help but laugh.
"Something like that."
Russell looked at Colter, then back at you.
"Interesting." Colter crossed his arms, "Don't you even dare, she's off limits." As you heard that, you shot him a look that said 'what the fuck!?', you turned your head back to Russell, "Don't listen to him. I'm free." Russell broke the starting argument, he wanted to lighten the mood, but that didn't go as planned, "How do you two get any jobs done bickering like this?" "Shut up, Russell." You and Colter both said at the same time. "Grab your stuff, we'll start the search." Colter ordered, no room for arguments or back talk.
You actually loved the forest, knew your way around one and how to perfectly search for someone or something in one, so it was obvious that you went first. Behind you walked Colter and Russell together, but even though they grew up in a forest and learned how to survive, they kept talking and arguing over the smallest things. You ignored them, searching for the missing backpacker until they finally pissed you off enough to flip out. They had been so busy arguing that they didn't see part of the evidence, and Russell accidentally stepped on it, "oh no." You sighed, "look what you two have done now! You keep ruining this whole investigation. Either make up now or shut up until we're done with this investigation." Colter and Russell felt both embarrassed, they hadn't meant to ruin the evidence, "I'm sorry," Colter started, "we'll focus on the investigation."
"You always this bossy?" Russell teased, catching up to you, you didn't answer, only picked up your pace, but for some reason Russell finally kept up with you. "You know, most people at least pretend to tolerate me." "Sounds like a them problem. Iโm not responsible for everyone elseโs poor judgment." You answered, catching him off guard, Russell whistled and said "you're fire, i can work with that."
Eventually everyone made it to the top, you spread out to find more evidence, so you didn't expect to find him here, "Russ, what are you doing here?" You asked, crossing your arms. "Aww, you got a nickname for me already, Sweetheart?" You rolled your eyes and decided not to answer that. "So did you find something here?" Russell dropped the teasing attitude and focused on the case, "yeah, here, see these footsteps, he went this way. I also found his backpack over there." He said as he pointed to a tree further up. "Okay, i'll call Colter and then we'll check it out." You said, seriously focused on the case now, as you call Colter, it starts to rain, through the rain hitting the leaves on the ground and the low wifi, Colter and you managed to figure out your location. "Okay, he'll be here in a few minutes, let's look around while we wait." "I'll search over here." Russell answered you but his gaze never left you.
You, Cotler and Russell moved quickly through the rain, following the footsteps before the storm washed them away. It had been a few hours, you three had actually found some evidence and there was a cave nearby, you wanted to check it out immediately, but the storm was too heavy, Colter called you back, "It's too dangerous, we can search in there tomorrow!" Cotler called out through the thick and loud storm, "but what if he's all alone in there!" You yelled back, "I know you want to save him, we all do, but you gotta come back, sweetheart!" Russell yelled back, his rough voice cutting through the loud rain. Colter shot Russell a look but didn't argue about what he called you, not now in a storm as heavy as this. You looked back at the cave one more time, it was safe from the storm, the Shaw brothers are right, dammit.
Walking through the storm, you all made it back to camp, Colter went into his trailer the second you got back, but Russell didn't rush. "You wanna come back to my trailer?" He invited, he wasn't being pushy, he wasn't as teasing like he was first. He really wanted you to come back with him. You took his hand and followed him, the rain outside kept getting louder and heavier, but inside was warm.
"Get comfortable, you'll be here for a while." Russell said, his voice softer than before, he grabbed a towel and handed it to you "here you go." You thanked him while drying yourself off. Russell watched you, "so...how long have you and my brother been friends?" You looked at him, a little surprised by the random question, "uhm...ten years." That was a long time, especially because Russell and Colter haven't talked for twenty years. Russell nodded, rubbing a hand through his hair while thinking, "He has probably told you about me, about our father," he paused, rubbing his stubble with his hand, "i'm not as bad as he thinks, y'know." You sat down next to him on his bed, you didn't look at him though, "i know," Russell looked surpised and let out a small laugh, "to be honest, i never believed that story." You continued, looking back at Russell. Russell's eyes changed, hope maybe? No, there was something else you saw in his eyes, but you couldn't quite name it. "You really believe that?" You nodded, your heart suddenly beating much louder than the rain against the trailer roof.
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
Russell studied your face, as if trying to decide whether you meant it. Slowly, he lifted a hand and brushed a damp strand of hair behind your ear, his fingers lingering against your cheek for just a second.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
Before you had the chance to answer, he leaned in, giving you every opportunity to pull away. When you didn't, his lips met yours gently, hesitant enough to let you pull away if you wanted to. Instead, you found yourself leaning into him, your hand instinctively resting against his chest. The kiss lingered for a few quiet seconds, neither of you in any hurry to end it. Outside, rain drummed steadily against the trailer roof, the sound fading into the background until it was just the two of you.
He drew back just enough to meet your eyes, his thumb still resting against your cheek.
"I..." He let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. "I've wanted to do that since you told me to shut up in the woods."

Three hours in the drive you start to see less city and more forest, the road became quiet, trees covering both sides, the sky became darker as you drove. Jensen kept one of his hands on your thigh while he drove you to the place he promised you woud absolutely love.
The deeper you went inside the forest, the less you saw of humanity, no city, no people around, just the two of you. Some might've called it creepy, staying in a cabin all alone, deep in a forest, surrounded by animals, just the two of you, a small town far up ahead, but you liked it. Jensen had bought this cabin a while back so he had a place to hide from the people, he loved being an actor, but sometimes a break was needed, and then he took you up here.
"Welcome home, Sweetheart." He said as he parked near the cabin, it was a 2 story wooden house, the outside was still covered in snow from the last snowstorm, but inside was cozy. He opened the front door and you were welcomed in an open living room that's connected to the kitchen. In the living room is a big couch, a fireplace, a big tv, chairs, a small wooden table in front of the couch, a basket where the blankets are kept in, some rugs on the floor. The kitchen wasn't big, but it was enough for two people, the view was beautiful though, when you're standing in the kitchen, coffee mug in your hand, enjoying the view, you could see the forest meeting the moody sea. In the hallway is a big staircase to the bedroom and bathroom, the bedroom is absolutely beautiful, a big bed, flannel blankets, right next to the bed is the window, with a view between the trees.
"Wow...Jensen, this is amazing." You say shocked, this has been your dream since you were little, being tucked away deep in the forest with your boyfriend. "It's no big deal, Sweetheart. Make yourself at home." Jensen responded with a chuckle as he walked back to the car to get your bags.
Once you two got everything settled in, it had gotten late, not like it could get any darker in this place. It's raining a lot outside with a strong and loud wind, but it was warm inside, the fireplace on, you two cuddled up on the couch. Jensen held you in his arms as you read a book, the blanket you're cuddled under had a deer pattern, your favourite. As the night went by, the two of you stayed cuddled on the couch, in your own world, no paparazzi, no work, just you and the forest.
