Still super proud of this, it's a Norse boardgame called tafl, and it was the strategy game of choice for Europe until the crusades brought chess in.
Different from a lot of other strategy games, there's an attacking force and a smaller defending force. The king is trying to escape and the invaders are trying to capture the king.
There are some super simple versions of this that are a cinch to do
Tafl games are a series of traditional board games historically played in Northern Europe. There were many variations, but the general concept being that the outside pieces are the 'attackers' while the inside pieces are the 'defenders.' Tafl games became obscure once chess gained popularity. idk read about it on Wikipedia
