Battle mats (dry-erase game mats) were not as established as they are now when I used to DM, which partly explains why I've always veered towards pencil and graph paper or moveable dungeon sections / tiles. All that being said, whiteboard markers can be a lot of fun pre-game as well as during the game. My drawing skills on smooth surfaces are flawed at best but the grid helps. ;) Since these laminated sheets fold up, they seem to have protected this map quite well.
