My Tabac Shaving Soap review
Following my post yesterday at https://plus.google.com/u/0/+DanievanderMerwe/posts/Ebc7AiV4tLv for some international reviews of this shaving soap... I gazed at the soap the whole day and eventually tore it open this afternoon to test it (I was going to wait until my Mitchell's Wool Fat soap had finished).
The experience was very much as the other reviewers had found with it being easy to lather, creating quite a nice stiff foam that glistened with moisture, and had a slightly sweet incense fragrance. I have not shaved with a fragranced soap for a long time, and despite what some people have said about it, I found it very mild and pleasant with no overpowering scent.
The shave itself was good with plenty of razor glide and the lather lasted perfectly. So all in all very good. I'll be alternating between this soap and the MWF until it is used up so I'll post an update if I notice more obvious differences between the two. MWF's claim to fame is the lanolin, but as one reviewer pointed out, lanolin is 14th on its list of ingredients... Both are tallow based shaving soaps.
For South African wet shavers though, what is important is that MWF is R250 for a refill (136g, on Bid & Buy) with shipping, whilst you can pick up the Tabac refill for R150 (125g) at a local Dis-Chem pharmacy. The cost for a porcelain bowl with the soap puck in is R395. The bowl is pretty weighty, and being smooth porcelain, could slip out of wet hands so you would want to be careful when handling the bowl (the puck of course could fit in any other suitable size bowl).
