It happens like this: It’s early evening, and Futaba is walking back from school. She’d stayed late to work on a project, something she has teacher’s permission to do, since most of her materials are at school and would be too much of a hassle to bring back home with her. Usually, this walk is fine; it’s usually empty, void of cars, void of people, even. It’s through backstreets so she can avoid the people that usually take the main roads.
