My portrayal of Vox is now officially Canon Divergent, mostly

Which is to say that for most writing that I do, Vox did not actually go off the rails and almost destroy all of hell. Also, he is keeping his body and not just being a screen that can hop about somehow. Honestly the only time I would write that is as crack because hopping head Vox was funny.

However, I will stay in keeping with canon for basically everything before that point. So, Vox did have the idea to get more power in heaven as well as hell, and he did run a slander campaign against Charlie and the hotel, and he did try to get more overlords on his side so he had all the right pieces to see his plan through. Also I can't deny that this guy would 100% tie Alastor to a chair given the opportunity so I suppose that can stay too.

But the key word there is try. I think what I'll say is it didn't work, or for the purpose of some threads, it hasn't worked yet. He's either trying to come up with new approaches to the whole takeover/war plan or he's thrown himself into damage control, trying to make sure he doesn't lose the power he already has in hell.

One big canon thing I'm definitely deviating from on this blog is Vox's backstory. I like his appearance (the heterochromia was a nice touch) and the way he died was funny enough that I'll take it, but the whole 'murder spree to climb the ladder' doesn't make much sense to me. I genuinely think some of the people he killed in the flashback he had no reason to kill, and I think he would have been caught way before he got to the top.

Instead of that, I'm going with something along these lines for my Vox:

Vox's father was a wealthy businessman and Vox was an only child, fully expected to become a carbon copy of his father and follow in his footsteps. Straight out of school he got a job at his father's company and got by on nepotism, but he never quite measured up to what his father expected of him. Desperate to prove himself, Vox came up with whatever ideas he could to improve the business. But most of them were in marketing, and his father thought that a waste of his son's time.

After an entire childhood of never being good enough, Vox decided to say screw it. If his father didn't see him as a success, he would go out on his own and make himself the biggest success ever, just to prove a point.

But things didn't quite work out the way he wanted them to. Instead of finding his way to becoming some fantastic marketing genius or producer, the only role Vox could fill was that of a weatherman. It was something, but not what he wanted. The anchor got the attention, and had the sway in the studio that Vox wanted. Vox didn't kill him, exactly, but when the man started choking in his dressing room and Vox was the only one there, he definitely let it happen.

He did kill the talkshow host when his spotlight was threatened. But from there he talked his way up, sucking up to the head of the studio and getting the producers fired when they suggested taking things in a direction he didn't like. Bit by bit he got more sway, sabotaging other shows ratings to make himself look like the only successful one, so the boss would listen to him when he swooped in to save the studio, and agree to make him a partner.

He put himself at the forefront at every opportunity, and gained something of a cult following, die hard fans that he realised he could take advantage of. He started inviting them in to be part of live audiences, ramping up his own reputation, but he got carried away in the show.

Vox died, before his father, which was the part that angered him the most, and decided very quickly to build his empire up anew, bigger and better than he could have in life.

Then he met Alastor, and for the first time, felt he'd met an equal. Someone he could trust and work beside. When Alastor rejected him, Vox sealed himself off to partnerships. Sure, he's part of the Vees, but when he gets too invested in Valentino, or too comfortable around Velvette, he pulls himself back, reminding himself that he can only trust himself, and that everyone else is simply a means to an end.
