âUh. Hey Mom.â Buck says.
Standing by the open bay doors, Eddie tilts his head toward the sunshine, and raises his eyebrows in a silent question.
âI canât talk long. Iâm headed outâŚâ
Buck runs his hand through his hair, listening.
Buckâs eyes search out Eddie and he flashes him a smile so sweet that Eddie draws in a breath at the sight of it.
âWeâre going couch shopping.â
Eddie canât make out the words, but the shrill tone comes through loud and clear as Buck winces and holds the phone away from his ear.
Buck waits until his mother pauses for breath to say âUh.. about thatâŚit was a great couch. I loved it âŚReally.â
Eddie watches as Buck rubs his hand on the back of his neck and then jerks his head to see Chimney laughing beside him.
âHe really is a terrible liar.â Chimney says, eyes still crinkled with mirth. Eddieâs mouth quirks, but he doesnât say anything, turning his eyes back to Buck.
âI have to replace it. Eddie and I were âŚuhâŚwrestling, and we broke it.â
âHow? Uh. Iâm a big guy, you know. And EddieâŚ.â Buck draws in a breath. âHeâs definitely a big guy. And we were being veryâŚathletic. And the couch was weak and now it is very, very broken.â Buck looks up from the floor and meets Eddieâs eyes, his own darkened with a memory.
âThatâs nice of you, mom, but you donât have to look up the model number - I think we need something sturdier. Something that can take a pounding.â
Chimney stares at Eddie, who swallows as his face flushes, though he keeps his expression stoic.
âOn the floor? NoâŚwell, rugburn for oneâŚâ
Eddie bites the inside of his cheek to keep from grinning. He doesnât look at Chimney directly, who is still staring at him, but now with a puzzled expression. Heâs pretty sure heâll lose it if he does.
âMom! Weâre not âin the habitâ of wrestling. Weâd never done it before. ButâŚâ Buck coughed, then grinned âdefinitely planning on doing it again.â
Buck looks up, pale eyelashes shining in the LA sun, and his gaze catches on Eddieâs, who quietly smolders at him.
He breathes out. âDefinitely doing it again. But we need a couch for that. So Iâve gotta go buy one. Ok? â
Buckâs eyebrows furrow and then relax.
âThanks mom. Talk soonâŚ.And Mom? Eddie and I are dating. Ok. Bye. Love you! Bye!â
With a quick sigh he swings around and heads toward Eddie.
Eddie arches an eyebrow âWrestling, Buck?â
âI couldnât tell her what we were actually doing.â he says.
âAthletic?â he asks, eyes twinkling.
âOh yeah. Practically acrobatic.â Buck says with satisfaction.
âWhat if she asks to see your wrestling moves?â Eddie asks, bumping his shoulder as they walk into into the late afternoon heat.â
âIâve got moves.â Buck says.
âI know you do.â Eddie says, indulgent.
âYou think you can take me?â Buck challenges, eyes narrowing, bouncing as he walks.
âYou know I can.â Eddie says equably, insufferably smug.
Then Buck says âI bet youâd look sexy in a Mexican wrestlerâs mask and nothing elseâŚâ
Still inside the cool bay, but with his ears burning, Chimney already has his phone out to call Maddie and tell her what really happened to the couch.
