A few months have passed since Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, oft stylized as T-E-E-D (certainly easier to type and much quicker to say), made his much heralded return with Leave A Light On. Orlando Higginbottom had been silent for an excruciatingly long four years before surprising us with a more toned down and melancholic sound on the track. And now the British singer songwriter and producer has followed it up with Don’t You Forget About Me, an absolutely stunning slice of woozy, foggy electronica and funk-inflected groovy synthpop. It’s obvious a new era of T-E-E-D has dawned upon us, one in which he’s exploring a more pensive yet still incredibly luscious and opulent sound. If you missed Leave A Light On previously, venture into its magnificence below.
(T-E-E-D)
I’m immensely glad that Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs hasn’t actually gone “extinct” despite a very prolonged silence. Orlando Higginbottom has finally returned with a new song after all those years as a favorite electronica, UKgarage, and indietronica artist of ours. The singer songwriter and producer surprises us with a toned down and melancholic sound on Leave A Light On. It’s a song that kicks off like James Blake, less like some of TEED’s earlier dance propulsive, quirky jaunting classics. But it’s a riveting and splendorous affair nonetheless, particularly once you’ve paced your way into its magnificent core, where it crescendos and blooms into a spacey spiraling, kaleidoscopic spinning polyphonic dazzler, on which TEED waxes heartfelt and wistful. Leave A Light On is a song that folds you deep into its world, an utterly intoxicating opus that TEED has released independently. I’m hoping it means much more TEED is coming our way.
Not only did I fall hard for Orlando Higginbottom’s flamboyant headdresses and irresistible dance music back in 2010, but I also fell in love with his production moniker, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. I mean, how do you even come up with a name as epic as that, and one involving dinosaurs, which I happen to have been obsessed with as a young girl? Household Goods will always be one of my favorite dance tracks. The moment those familiar chords hit, I just break out in a smile. Oh where, oh where have you gone lately, T-E-E-D? I can only pray that Orlando is fast at work with some brilliant new tunes. In the meantime, Canadian producer UNBLOOM affords us a wonderful return to Household Goods by giving it a celestial sparkling remix. This future flickering take on classic T-E-E-D is sheer bliss and a generous end of year gift to help us transition into the new year. UNBLOOM promises big things to come in 2017. We look forward with great anticipation.
