Synth Biker...
Communication Design - Week 6
At the end of class today we were asked to come up with 5 possible interview subject for our Task 3 “ask me anything!”. We were asked to identify either historical designers, objects, movement or typefaces that we would be motivated to learn more about. Above are my five objects with a little description below of some introductory research.
Possible Interview Subjects
1. Designer Pual Rand (Historic Designer)
Pual Rand was an iconic art director and graphic designer known for his modernist work. Rand’s modernist core ideology was to take the familiar or ordinary and defamiliarise it to the audience. While this thinking was not revolutionary, Rual Rands take on it certainly was. In his graphic design work he would take the corporate look’ you expect from a large corporation and transform it into something fun and modern. An iconic example of this is the ‘IMB’ logo. His work was revolutionary for a reason and he has become a very interesting interview subject to me as I’d love to know how someone from the past is about create new designs that would inevitably stand the test of time. 2. Art Movement Of Pop Art (Movement)
Pop art originated in New York with iconic artist such as Andy Warhol, an artists which we have discussed in our lecturers. I gravitated towards this movement because Pop art has become one of the most recognisable styles of modern art, so naturally it was the first thing I thought of. However through some deeper research I really liked how the Pop Art movement aimed to blur the lines between "high" art and "low" art culture. The concept that there is no hierarchy of culture and that art may borrow from any source really caught my attention. Pop artists tended to celebrate more commonplace objects and people of everyday life and I would love to discover more about how that remains relevant today. 3. FUTRA (Font)
Futura was a font designed by Paul Renner in 1927. This font was a geometric based sans-serif typeface and contributed to the New Frankfurt Project. The font was based on geometric shapes, mainly being the circle and reflected the influence of the Bauhaus Design Period. What pulled me into discovering this font further was it’s association with efficiency and forwardness. The font adopted the German slogan "die Schrift unserer Zeit" meaning it is "the typeface of our time" and in english this was translated as "the typeface of today and tomorrow". In an interview with this typeface I’d love to discover what gave this font so much weight in society and why this font of “Futra” was labelled so futuristic. 4. Bodoni (Font)
Bondi is a typeface that invented much earlier than Futra listed above. Bondi was again a serif typeface designed in 1740-1913 by Giambattista Bondi. It originated in the late 18th century and had been frequently used ever since. When first released the font was labeled as classical due to its rational structure. Despite being labelled classical it should be noted that these fonts are not updated versions of Roman or Renaissance letter styles, but are actually new designs. This font is characterised but it crisp detail and fine stokes. This font initially took my attention as in Europe is it one of the most most common used body texts. It also exists a lot in high fashion glossy magazines like the iconic vogue. (image from; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodoni#/media/File:ITCBodoni.png)
4. Synthesizer (Object)
As my background is in music I thought it would be best to also investigate something that I share a natural common interest with like the Sythesizer. The synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals. What drew me the most to this designed object is its ability for personification. More often that not the sythnesizer is listed as being “as important, and as ubiquitous, in modern music today as the human voice." Therefore what an amazing object to replicate the personification of an object during an interview. To keep this object linked with design I could also go into the counter cultural psychedelic movement of the 1960′s and how the synth accompanied other art projects like psychedelic art. I believe this object could be challenging to keep bringing back to design but its prospects for an interview are just so wide and exciting! (dancephoria)
Grungy synthesizer tune that I made. First thing I wrote with my new keyboard. Especially had lots of fun using the pitch wheel to change tones.
I guess 2015 is the year of 80s sounding songs(electropop and synthpop)
