I was reading Systemkollaps, and I noticed something that hadn't stood out when I was reading the English edition:
Inside the cabin, Iris asked, âSo what is it with worrying about humans getting eaten all the time?â
This is before we find out what Murderbot has been redacting. It tells us that "Ratthi tried to explain."
But Iris was there when it had its redacted moment. Iris knows that SecUnit hallucinated having its own limb eaten. We know Murderbot is an unreliable narrator, especially when it's talking about itself and its emotions. It wants us to think this is just about Ratthi being fauna-bait, but they were never almost "chewed up together in an alien fauna's mouth." Ratthi started to leave the shuttle, and when everyone, including Murderbot, yelled at him, he stopped. Ratthi says:
"I have a specialist survey certificate from Preservationâs FirstLanding and seven years of on-planet experience, but it didnât stop me from nearly being murdered on a survey. SecUnit stopped me from nearly being murdered."
Murderbot implies that this is hostile fauna-related, but it saved Ratthi and the rest of the PreservationAux team from being murdered by GrayCris. Bharadwaj and Volescu are the only two it saved from "being eaten to death by a giant alien hostile." Ratthi is talking about GrayCris.
Okay, the thing I didnât tell anybody about my right leg getting eaten in the altered memory sequence: Iâm 73 percent certain that never happened to me, but thereâs an 89 percent chance I did see that happen to a human at some point.
Iris is pretty smart.
