alright cowboys listen up I made a cursory post about this book last night when I was half asleep and in my feelings and completely 100% incoherent but now it’s time to Get It Going for real

SO last night I finished this book I had been reading for about a week called “the last thing you surrender” and it was Amazing, like….I just sat there and looked at the cover for a few minutes after reading it and it’s been like….four or five years since I’ve done that on that scale

like there’s good books and then there’s This Book I sound pretentious rn and I know that but it’s quite literally the only way I know how to convey to you how amazing this was

I wanna say it’s a wwii book and I wanna say it’s a civil rights book and I wanna say it’s a social commentary and I wanna say it’s about personal journeys and finding yourselves and it really is all of those things but it just Feels like so much more u know

for a little summary so you know what it’s about instead of just listening to me Scream lmao:

it’s set during wwii and it follows a black family and a white family and their different relationships with society as well as the war itself and how they have to function differently and how they interact with each /other/

one family doesn’t think they owe anything to the white men and the country that hates them (rightfully so) and the other thinks it’s their duty to protect everything that is so freely given to them bc they don’t know anything else

and then they meet. and then everything changes.

and it would’ve been so Easy to make it into your typical white saviour story, but it isn’t

it’s learning hard truths about yourselves and others and holding yourself and others accountable for all the horrible things you've done and and questioning why things Have to be the way they are and it does not hold Any punches when it comes to telling you how it was

and it has the added bonus of not being written by a white man for once so it actually feels Real, which is just so hard to find in historical fiction from the time period, but it’s also so tender, which isn’t something you would expect from this kind of story at all I've never read a story with so many ugly truths that managed to be so warm at the same time

also it was so well researched!! there was so much care and time devoted to this and you can TELL. with every word and every chapter and every plot point you k n o w exactly how this story was treated when it was being written bc it’s exactly the same way you treat it when you’re reading it

also there was a quote that really stuck with me near the beginning and I’ll put that here: “It was as if in his terrible repose, the dead man whispered a reminder of the unutterable truth beneath the soft facade of skin–that for all his pride and pretensions, a man was ultimately just another animal with teeth.”

2. Is your room messy or clean? So fucking messy. It’s not terrible but only bc my roommate is clean so only my side is a mess but I’m such a messy person.

23. Describe your dream date? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ good food+movie+cuddle+warm and fuzzy feelings? Idk I don’t really dream about this stuff and I’m tragically single.

24. How much money do you have in your wallet at this moment? Fuck if I know and I don’t feel like checking. Probably around $20.

25. What color socks are you wearing? Grey-blue. But I’ve been thinking of putting on my fuzzy captain America socks cause it’s cold and they’re red white and blue.

26. How many pillows do you sleep with? As many as physically possible. I like sleeping on top of a mound of pillows. Currently I have 4 on my bed and my giant panda stuffed animal body pillow.

27. Do you have a job? Nope. I’m a senior in college who doesn’t have work study since my school sucks sometimes. When do I have time for a job. I barely have time to look and I really need to figure out graduation.

28. How many friends do you have? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk. Enough. I’ve got a good number of them both at school and at home. If you think we’re friends then we probably are. Like I can count my best best friends if I have to but that seems mean and I don’t want to count the number of friends in general cause that seems arbitrary and mean.

29. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Idk. Like I’ve done not great stuff but nothing is standing out as the worst thing ever.

32. 3 favorite girls namesFuck i dunno. My latest OC is named Ally. Her gf is Jess. My other female OCs are Angela, Theresa, and Elle. Would I name my kid any of those names. Hell no. The terrible things I inflict on OCs are to be kept far away from any potential children I have. Are they favorites. Idk. But they’re the only things coming to mind.

42. Do you take any medications daily? Sometimes it feels like I take ibuprofen daily. It ain’t prescribed but that’s chronic headaches for you. Also I take antidepressants for pmdd

52. What is your dream car? One that flies. That’s a nice dream. Ooooh a self driving one would be cool too. As it is I don’t have a license so dream car is moot issue. So I guess my dream car is a bus.

62. Do you still watch cartoons?Hell yeah. Steven Universe owns my soul and probs always will. I’ve also been watching OK K.O. recently with astranyx and it’s been fun.

72. Starbucks or Dublin Donuts?Whichever is open and closest to me. I have no preference I don’t really like coffee. I went to Crazy Mocha pretty regularly in high school cause that was the closest coffee shop to the school. So I guess that one. I still have some fond memories of that place.

82. Favorite ice cream flavor? Chocolate. Occasionally chocolate + other stuff like peanut butter or brownie or mint or more chocolate. Most of the time I’m a chocolate purist tho. I love chocolate soft serve or a nice scoop of chocolate ice cream on a cone. Especially the stuff from Dave and Andy’s back home. It’s super good. Klondikes are the only exception cause my fav Klondike is dark chocolate shell w/ vanilla ice cream but that’s different.

I really want to make a video about the creation of implicit bias through racial coding in animated movies but i’m a shit writer. i wanted to get a script done before i went back to school but i only have a skeleton of what it will look like and a bunch of notes about how Angry Birds is the worst movie ever made.
