Does a book ever surprise you with the power it has? Winter Loon by Susan Bernhard is like that. So glad I took a chance on this debut. βWes Ballot lives with his parents who fight a lot and drink a lot. One night they fight and his father leaves (again) His mother walks out on the frozen lake and falls through the ice. He cannot save her. His dad sends him to live with his grandparents, who do not want him. And he learns a family secret that hurts him. He longs for his dad to come back and wonders βWill I ever be good enough?ββ We often see the pretty on social media and seldom see the chaos and wreckage that makes up our past. I donβt know how Bernhard got into a teenage boyβs head, but she nailed it. Will I ever be good enough? What kind of father will I be? Is my father proud of me? This book is probably not for you if growing up was all sunshine and flowers and unicorns. If there was some darkness though you should get to know Wes Ballot. And remember - the more you talk about something the less power it has over you.
