He felt her exhausted stare over the crown of his head, a golden glint matching the flames of the candle lights from their Manor, but didnât interrupt his lecture to stare back. âPower not only relies on beauty, dear brother. It also can be found in knowledge.â He found that ironic coming from her mouth, mostly when all sheâd been doing for the last hour has been watching her figure in the mirror, fixing every wrinkle that may be giving her sickened state away. âHowever, you must keep in mind all paths lead to the same road. The price for it is always high...â
Snorting softly, he switched to the next page, once more removing a curl of dark-violet hair getting in the way. He thought again about finally getting a haircutâhis hair had been growing as rebel as their Anâda, mostly since reaching adulthoodâbut there always were more important matters to take care about than petty fashion. âGuess itâs late to discuss that, Drie. If thereâs a price to pay for stopping the nightmares, Iâll gladly take it.â
Her palm rested on the top of the page he was just readingâwrinkled, lilac and unlike the natural lavender of her skinâprompting his attention to her. He couldnât help to wonder about how to explain the splotches and the purple lines of her veins, how to word properly the physical signs the arcane corruption was leaving on her once pristine figure.
Heâd found in his travelings to the borders of the Empire the kaldorei hadnât been the only race populating the land as he was told in school; definitely not the first ones the Goddess brought to the world, but most likely the last that will endure until the end of life itself. Also contrasting to them, heâd learned the other races grew up, aged and passed away. They became old.
And his sister looked like some of them. Dorei didnât age, but she looked old. Â
âLook at me, brother: Whatever good remains of me, it does not rely here, but only on my daughter,â The elegance and steady flow of her speech was a blatant proof of how hard she was grasping onto whatever was left of her mental sanityâon the outside, worn and battered, but still struggling on the inside. âPlease, you must take Mylenne away from me, spare the withered crops from the good ones. Bring her to EldreâThalas and forget aboutââ
No. Definitely not. âArane, no, Aedriel, stop that!â His book fell to the ground and made a hard noise, but he didnât care anymore, holding onto her shoulders, shaking her slightly.âI wonât stop until I find a cure! I will save you!â Â
Warnings: language, badly concealed horniness, various piratical schemes

Aelin joined the rest of the pirate lords once again the next day as they gathered in the council room to discuss what the hell their plans were going to be.
âI know this sounds impossible, but weâll have to sail together,â Rolfe declared.
âThe fuck?â From more than one pirate lord.
âWell, weâre going to pose as the respectable seamen we all are, yeah?â
Nods and hums of assent.
âIn that case, my lords, weâve got to stick to the Respectable Seaman Code and travel in groups!â he explained, as if it were the most logical thing heâd ever said. Which it decidedly was not. Rolfe was not famed for his logic. âCanât risk Maeve The Bitchâs navy spotting lone merchantmen, no we cannot. Theyâre liable to think weâre some dastardly pirate out to steal all the gold we can get and blow up any Royal Navy bastard who dares to try and stop us!â He widened his eyes in mock horror.Â
Chuckles from the gathered pirate lords, who were finally starting to see Rolfeâs rationale.Â
âI know it sounds stupid, and you donât have to like it, but if we as pirates are to keep our traditions alive, weâve got to adapt.â Rolfe cast his eyes slowly around the room, meeting each lordâs stare. âAye?â
Muttered âayesâ from around the table.
âRight. Now--â
âJust a minute now, Yer Bloody Majesty.â Darrow stood, bracing his palms on the table. âHowâre we deciding who sails with who? Ifân Iâve got to put up with someoneâs bullshit, Iâm likely to shoot him meself.â He sat back down, having spoken his piece. Low murmurs of agreement and snorts and snickers sounded around the room.Â
âHell, I hadnât quite thought that through,â Rolfe admitted.
âBetter think quickly then,â Darrow grunted.
âHmm.â Rolfe considered for a moment. âRight. Hereâs how itâs working, and you lot can all shut up and listen. Iâll give a list of whoâs sailing with whom, and if you donât like it, just keep your friendly distance unless fired upon. Clear?â
âClear,â came the response, albeit grudgingly.
âGood. Now. Letâs talk strategy and plans. For we canât have a conquest without some planning, can we?â
âThe hell we canât,â Rowan contradicted, slouching in his chair.Â
âOh? And just how has not having any plan helped you in the last few weeks, Whitethorn?â Rolfe raised a brow.
Rowan went silent, pressing his lips together in tense irritation. Across the table, Aelin muffled her smirk. It wouldnât be at all necessary to laugh, not when Rolfe was already doing a fine job of needling Whitethorn.Â
âPoint proven.â Rolfe turned back to the charts. âNow then, my lordsâŚâ
~
âHeâs put us with fucking Galathynius,â Rowan growled, storming into his cabin with his lieutenants following in his wake. âAsshole.â
âShit,â Lorcan grumbled, âsheâs never going to let up on us.â
âShe?â Vaughanâs eyes bugged out with shock. Heâd been in charge of the ship while Rowan, Lorcan, and Gavriel were occupied at the pirate lordsâ council, so he hadnât yet heard of Aelinâs true identity.
âShe,â Rowan confirmed. âCaptain Aelin Galathynius, daughter of Rhoe, took the pseudonym Ash while at sea because nobody would take a woman pirate seriously.â
âYou canât say that isnât true,â Vaughan mused. âEven we learned she was trouble.â
âShut up,â Rowan grumbled, âI donât need any more reminders.â
âSo whatâs the plan then, Cap? Just keep as far from Galathynius as we can?â Gavriel smoothly redirected the conversation.
âAye, pretty much.â Rowanâs eyes flashed with a brief spark of anger. âThough heâs gone and put Galathynius as the flotilla head, so weâre going to be subject to whatever the hell she asks. Godsdammit!â He slammed his hands against one wall of his cabin. âBastard knew exactly what he was doing.â
âYou know how Rolfe is with his fucked-up little games,â Lorcan interjected. âHe was probably waiting for this exact opportunity, if I do say so myself.â
âDoes this mean youâll have to meet with Captain Galathynius?â Vaughan asked, ever the pragmatist.
âSadly yes,â Rowan sighed. âShe asked for this evening. Her, me, and Allsbrook, the heads of our unit. Weâre allowed to bring a couple of men, of course. Gav, youâll come, yeah?â
âOf course, Cap.â
âVaughan, too. Lor, youâll take charge of the Doranelle while weâre away.â
âAye, Cap.â
âVaughan, youâre coming too. You havenât met Galathynius yet; I think you should.â
âCaptain, that sounds awfully like sarcasm.â
âMe? Sarcastic?â Rowan smirked. âNever.â
âYou keep telling yourself that, Cap.â Vaughan smirked right back. âAye, Iâll come with you. Meet Captain Galathynius for myself. See what sheâs like.â
âAggravating,â Rowan grunted under his breath. âDamned aggravating is what sheâs like.â
~
âMy thanks to everyone for being willing to meet on such short notice,â Aelin announced, striding into the meeting room with Manon, Elide, and Lysandra at her back. âAre we all here?â
âNo,â Ren Allsbrook returned snarkily, sprawling in his chair.Â
âI donât need any of your sass, Allsbrook,â Aelin snorted, kicking his chair upright.Â
He yowled a curse and sat up straight, waiting for her to speak.
âRight,â Aelin began, pacing a slow circle around the table, âfirst off, I am sorry to disappoint those of you who were expecting me to be Rhoeâs son. As you can hopefully tell, I am in fact his daughter. Any stories you might have heard about me being trained by Rolfe are true.â She folded her hands behind her back. âAfter Father died, Rolfe took me on as an apprentice. I spent a few years kicking Renâs ass in training, and after a while I got dumped out at sea with a small ship and crew, ordered to make Rolfe proud.â
Ren grumbled something about damned training games under his breath, scowling.
âSo youâve been made flotilla head purely because youâre Rolfeâs golden child?â Lorcan scoffed from his stance behind Rowanâs chair.
âOh, Salvaterre,â Aelin crooned, clicking her tongue, âI had hoped your time spend under my command had taught you better than to question my authority. But clearly, you just never learn.â
Vaughan stifled a snicker, watching Lorcanâs face go red with irritation.Â
âNo,â Aelin continued, âRolfe made me flotilla head because he has assigned us to travel out to Fenharrow, and out of the three of us, Iâve accumulated the most time in those waters.â
âRather unlike Rolfe to be so practical,â Rowan snorted.
Aelinâs turquoise eyes trained on him, narrowing ever so slightly. âIs it?â
Upon consideration, he really had no response.
She smirked. âWell then. I wonât bother laying out any nitty-gritty orders, mainly because both of you are competent captains who, unlike some, donât need to be told which course to set to get to Fenharrow. A few things, though.â She dropped into the seat at the head of the table, looking Rowan and Ren dead in the eyes. âFirst, and this is mostly for you, Ren, we are not going chasing after Royal Navy. Is that clear?â Her eyes like steel.
âClear,â Rowan nodded.
âClear,â Ren grunted, obviously not terribly pleased with that order.
âIf they choose to chase and attack us, we will of course return fire and blast them to hell. However, we will not be veering off course to needle them, much as we want to. Agreed?â
âAgreed,â Rowan and Ren replied.
âExcellent. Other than that, I really have no stipulations. If you spot a prize, you may chase it, but do not stray too far from the rest of us, as we donât need your stupid ass bringing all hell down upon yourself. And you know what happens if you fall behind. And because we are supposed to be a unit, please do consider flagging for help if youâre stuck. Furthermore, do not forget that we are pretending to be merchantmen, and merchants donât typically sail all that well.â That drew wry chuckles from the pirates gathered in the room. âThatâs all the basic stuff I have for you. We sail tomorrow with the tide, so make all the preparations you need to make, because I am not waiting. That means you, Allsbrook.â
Ren grumbled under his breath. âAye, Captain,â he returned, scraping his chair back and standing. He offered her a brief salute before leaving the room, his two lieutenants flanking him.
âI like her,â Vaughan murmured to Rowan, thinking Aelin wouldnât be able to hear.
âWhy thank you,â Aelin grinned, taking a seat on the edge of the table and smiling sweetly at Vaughan. âAt least one of Whitethornâs men has some manners.â
âThereâs no need to be rude, Captain,â Rowan snarked, propping his booted feet up, âVaughan here is the only one of my lieutenants who hasnât yet had the joy of making your acquaintance.â
âIt certainly is a joy,â Aelin agreed, swinging her legs like a child.
âNot when you steal my goddamned shit,â Rowan grunted.
âOh dear, are your feathers still in a ruffle about that?â she crooned. âPipe down, Whitethorn, I promised you Iâd take good care of your precious little coin collection and good care I have taken. The best care, in fact.â
âYeah, you cared them right into Rolfeâs safe, Iâll bet.â
âThe hell would I do that?â she scoffed. âMy loot, my property.â
âLike fuck it is,â Rowan snarled, ire sparking in his eyes. âI collected every single one of those coins, Galathynius, and you--â He cut himself off before he could finish, words failing him.
âI what?â She crooked a brow. âI better return them? Surely you know better than that,â she tutted.
âI damn well do,â he grumbled.Â
âDonât ruffle your feathers any further, you buzzard,â she chided, slipping one hand into her pocket. âAnd I can prove that I havenât pawned your precious little collection.â She tossed a small leather pouch to him, its contents clinking against the weathered wooden tabletop. Rowan snatched the pouch, tipping it out into his hand.
âHow--how the fuck did you know these were the ones I worried about?â he gasped, stunned to see each of his ten ancient, carefully collected and preserved Wendlynite coins glinting in the palm of his hand.Â
âNot hard to tell when theyâre wrapped in oilcloth and separated from the rest. Though I did wonder, why Wendlynite coins? Sentiment, perhaps? No,â she hummed, âthe fierce Captain Whitethorn couldnât possibly have any of that weak sentiment.â
âShut up,â Rowan groaned. âIf you must know, yes. Sentiment.â
âHow cute,â Aelin cooed. She hopped off the table, brushing off her jacket. âAnyway. I really should go back to my ship. Which, by the way, you have never been within a day or twoâs journey of.â
âLies,â Rowan smirked, smug. âWe fired upon you in the Iron Isles. Or have you already blocked that unfortunate incident from your mind?â
âThat, as you may soon discover, was not the Terrasen, darling.â And blowing a kiss over her shoulder, she sauntered away.
Unable to process what sheâd just said, Rowan stared at her receding figure, his mind momentarily stalled both by the âdarlingâ and the kiss sheâd tossed, his good sense overwhelmed by the very male part of him that saw Aelin Galathyniusâs stunning beauty and yelled at him to chase her down and kiss her senseless. He shook his head, shoving down that damned traitorous part of him. Literally.
âCaptain!â Gav bumped his shoulder. âShipâs not going to walk to you, yâknow!â
âDick,â Rowan huffed, resuming his pace towards the Doranelle. Once aboard, he called out his orders, sending his crew into a flurry of activity. Sails were set, the crew whoâd gone into the town were rounded up, provisions came aboard--and yes, this time there was plenty of rum--and all preparations for leaving the next morning went underway. After all, Galathynius wasnât going to wait for any stragglers.
~
âHe likes you, yâknow,â Elide teased, nudging Aelin with her elbow. âOr did you conveniently not see the look of complete horny surprise on his face when you called him âdarling?ââ
âOh, Iâm very well aware of how he reacted,â Aelin smirked. âThatâs why I called him that.â
âUh huh. That, and youâre just as horny.â
âBitch!â Aelin gasped. âI most certainly am not!â
âAnd what was it you told me not that long ago about hot tattooed guys with long hair?â Elide arched a brow. âSomeoneâs a damn hypocrite.â
âGoddammit,â Aelin grumbled. âFine, El, the manâs more than easy on the eyes. But I am not and have never been horny for him. Iâve got a ship to run and others to command.â
âAnd damn do you like being in charge,â Elide snickered.
âShut up!â Aelin hissed, the tips of her ears flaring red. âShit, Elide, you know me far too well.â
Elide winked, striding up the Terrasenâs gangplank. âLove you too, Cap!â
Aelin sighed dramatically as she too headed up her gangplank and made her way to her cabin, rolling out her navigational charts across her desk. They were to sail for Fenharrow, meaning they would travel the very same path sheâd just taken coming from the Iron Isles to the Keep, which meantâŚfun. Oh yes indeed. A crooked, slightly evil grin slipped onto her face as she charted a path to Fenharrow. And then two more, for a good pirate always had a contingency plan or three. And, as luck and her own slightly wicked scheming would have it, all three courses passed near or through the Iron Isles. Excellent. That meant she could send the Orynth on a quick supply run into Perranth and meet up with her when the Terrasen, the Doranelle, and the Murtaugh (Renâs ship) passed by the Isles.Â
Which, of course, meant that Rowan Whitethorn and his crew would be introduced to the ship which they had actually fired upon and be properly flabbergasted at the sight of Aelinâs lovely little decoy ship.Â
