Flyer for a show at the Middle East created by the band Turkish Delight, appearing on the same bill with Japanese noise band Ruins, Supreme Dicks and Karate on September 15, 1994.
My friend and fellow WHRB DJ Carl was the bassist in the thoroughly weird and delightful band Turkish Delight, so I frequently ended up with their flyers even when the gigs otherwise weren’t totally my scene... Like this one.
I always enjoyed a Turkish Delight gig, as they were more electric live than on record. And Karate was also within the bounds of my taste. (Though I actually liked Geoff Farina’s other band, The Secret Stars, a bit better.) But the Japanese noise of Ruins? Pass. Ditto for Supreme Dicks. I remember we had a Ruins record in heavy rotation at the station around this time, so I definitely heard it. And I was definitely not into it.
Since I didn’t attend this gig, I was initially a little unsure about whether this happened in 1993 or 1994. Then I stumbled upon Geoff Farina’s web site, which cleared up everything. On it, he helpfully lists every single damn show he’s ever played, including this one.
Also, how about that starting show time of 10:30pm for a four-band bill? And it was on a weekday to boot. (Yes, I had to look it up.) I knew shows used to start later than they do now. Proof!
