Bill 21’s days-recent banning of public ritual, prayer rooms and ongoing religious symbols limitations, not to mention the limitations on Halal menus and more, really boils my blood.
We know it’s discriminatory, as it targets primarily Muslim women, Sikhs, and anyone that doesn’t pass into a Christian-white society.
As someone that researches and writes and wants to publish a book on modern spiritual practices that are inspired by pre-Quiet Revolution Quebec, it always makes my skin crawl. Would my book anger the entire province at this point? I am writing it in English, one, for ease of access to those that didn’t grow up with French, and the Bescherelle has made me sob too many times as a kid, but also, just to stick it to their racist, xenophobic, and stuck up government.
If anyone knows how to try fighting these recent bans, as I live outside of Quebec and my vote doesn’t count, please let me know.
I couldn’t imagine having our workplace prayer rooms banned… that shouldn’t happen to anyone.
You know, if you really want total laïcité, come for our White Mass rituals. But noooo. You’re only going to focus on people who have had to adapt to a completely different country, they’ve built beautiful communities, and you just don’t want to see their faith in public.
The audacity.
