I need more mind-reader Carlos. I'll beg. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease. Even if its not Jaylos, just w chapter of Carlos hearing random thoughts. I need it. Please.
Summary: superpowers!au: Telepathic!Carlos is starting his first day at Auradon Prep to better control his powers. He’s usually pretty good at tuning out the voices in his head, but as he walks around campus, all he hears is some guy (loudly) thinking of every naughty thing he wants to do to Carlos

No one likes to play with offspring of the people who tried to kill their parents, who would have guessed?
Carlos’ isn’t complaining at all - less people talking to him means he can focus more on tuning out their thoughts.
“I can’t believe I have history first class.”
“Why did I wear this for the first day?”
“That’s the girl whose mother tried to kill Queen Snow!”
Carlos snatches Evie’s arm and pulls her away from a set of girls who are glaring at her, not that she’s noticed it at all. “I hate that we’re being split up for evaluations,” he mumbles and tries to ignore the dirty looks from the girls.
“I know,” Evie pats his arm sweetly, “but we’ll all meet up for lunch.”
“And if anyone messes with you guys, let me know.” Mal stops, checks the number above her head. “Auditorium A. This is Carlos.”
He groans to himself, pulls away from Evie. “Okay, I can do this, right?”
“Here!” Evie unclasps her necklace, shoves it in his hands. “You can fiddle with this, help your nerves.”
Carlos grins, immediately twists the chain between his fingers and flicks the blue pendant. “Thanks E.”
“At least Evie will have a friend in pretty boy up there,” Mal tosses her head down the hall, towards Auditorium B, where Jay is standing outside next to a tall guy with sparkling eyes.
They’re far enough that Jay hasn’t noticed him and Carlos can’t pick up on his thoughts, but he feels a blush rising to his face anyways.
“Come on, Princess,” Mal grabs Evie’s hand, leads them down the hall.
“You’ll do great, Carlos! Just take deep breaths.”
“And if anyone fucks with you, remember their name and face!”
Carlos meekly waves as they retreat and steps into the room. The orientation doesn’t officially begin for another two minutes, so he picks a seat and twirls Evie’s necklace, trying not to grimace at the pain in his skull.
“…stop talking for once and…”
“…gonna suck so much if we’re in the same…”
“…should I tell him or wait for him to notice…”
“…physics II in the east wing, how can…”
“…sitting here? Hello? Yoo-hoo?”
Carlos jumps, follows the voice and looks up. “Huh?” He twists Evie’s necklace tighter, feels the metal grit together in his fingers.
There’s another student, a guy with taped glasses, who is looking down in confusion. “Is anyone sitting here?”
“Sweet.” The guy sets his backpack on the ground and slides into the seat next to Carlos. “I’m Doug.”
“…Deely is the worst, I can’t get stuck with him for two…”
“I haven’t seen you around before Carlos. Are you new?”
“…and dad to buy me another set of book covers…”
“…save me a seat at lunch or I swear I’m never…”
“Where are you from?”
“…I forget my money? Crap, I’ll have to…”
Doug doesn’t say anything out loud, but Carlos can hear the “oh shit”.
Evie’s necklace is twisted and pulled until he can feel the metal straining to stay together. Carlos really hopes he won’t snap it as he continues to yank on the chain.
“Attention everyone, we’re set to begin orientation! I’m Fairy Godmother, I’ll be evaluating you all today, hopefully this will go by quickly! We’ll start…”
The woman’s voice drowns out in the thunder of thoughts, students cursing of boredom or focusing on their class schedules. It all rings through Carlos’ head. He never had this much trouble on the Isle, but then again he was never so close to other people on the Isle. Cruella kept him inside most of the time and she’s too far gone to formulate proper thoughts of her own.
It’s the stress, Carlos thinks to himself over the low rumble in his head. Being in a new place, new people. Being without Mal and Evie.
Doug nudges him and Carlos jumps. “Hey, uh, Carlos. They’re calling for you.”
He snaps his head up, Fairy Godmother is calling his name. “De Vil? Carlos De Vil?”
With a deep sigh, Carlos pushes himself out of his seat, moves toward the stage. The woman’s smile and chipper chattering helps to focus on her instead of the voices in his head.
“I can read minds,” Carlos says before she even opens her mouth. He wants to leave.Every student who went up on stage was allowed to leave, they would be free until lunch.
“How so?” She scribbles on her notepad.
“I…can hear their thoughts in my head.”
He didn’t pay attention to the students who went up before him, but surely they did more than just talk to Fairy Godmother. Carlos could hear ohhs and awws with his head down, each student showcasing their abilities on the stage.
The students seated are focused in on him. It’s terrible.
“Maybe he can’t do anything, poor kid.”
“He’s one of the Isle kids Ben brought over.”
“Yeah, I am,” Carlos responds to what Fairy Godmother didn’t say as he spins the pendant in his fingers. He wonders how many students can hear them from the up here. “One of the Isle kids, I mean.”
Fairy Godmother is silent. Did she not believe he could read her mind?
“538,” Carlos answers before she can ask. “The number you were thinking of was 538. Can I please leave now?”
“Well I need to ask you some questions.”
“I don’t have to try, I just hear thoughts randomly. It started when I was a kid, like 5 maybe.” Carlos pauses, watches the shock settle over her face. “No, I can’t fully control it. Sometimes I can block it out and sometimes I can’t.”
She blinks. “Okay, well, you’ll probably be in smaller class sizes. Professor Belle will be with you for-.”
“Great, thanks.” Carlos turns on his heel, heads for the doors. He can hear the murmur of students, their confusion, their curiosity. They probably heard everything and he’s too stressed out to care.
He’s also too stressed out to pay attention to where he’s going because the next thing Carlos knows, he’s out of the auditorium and walking into a solid body in the halls.
Arms encircle him and the laughter vibrate through the broad chest. “Hey baby boy.”
“Carlos!” Evie chrips, grabs his arm, pulls him toward her. “How was it?”
He places his hand on hers, squeezes until she’s squeezing back. “Loud.”
“We’ll go outside,” Evie whispers, “come on.” She drags him down the hall and through another door. Her movements are hurried but her head is silent and Carlos can feel himself relax in the peace.
Jay, on the other hand, is following them and won’t stop talking. “Fuck. Is he okay? What happened? I know where the nurse’s station is, should I go get Baymax?”
“Shut up,” Carlos groans. He falls onto a bench with Evie sitting beside him, holding his hands. “For like, two seconds.”
“I…didn’t say anything?”
Evie rubs his shoulder and turns to Jay. “Carlos can hear other people’s thoughts. You need to clear your head or go away. Please.”
There’s a frightened “oh shit” and then silence.
When Carlos raises his head, he expects to see Evie, still sitting beside him with a beautifully silent mind. But she’s not the only one he sees.
Jay hasn’t moved and is watching him, mouth hanging open and face impossibly red.
I tried to do a lot of mind-reading Carlos and end some with some Jaylos to further the plot. I hope you liked it!
