The American Airlines Super 80s were always an iconic fixture of any major US airport, and, indeed, seeing them on my trips over the years has always meant that I was close to home and family. And it’s a sight I will deeply miss.

After an episode of Air Crash Investigation, I actually had a mild fear of the DC-9/MD-80 series; however, after flying on one, that fear was soon quelled. A flight on one of these was always an unusual and quirky affair, with how different the aircraft and cabin were to most small airliners, but never without nostalgic charm.

After Delta retires their ageing MD-80/90 fleet, these once dime-a-dozen Mad Dogs will become a truly rare sight in US airports. I’m so sorry to see them go.

There is no IFE system on this American Airlines flight, so I have lots of time to think.

I think man this baby screaming behind me is loud.

I wonder If this MD-80 is older or younger than me... I'm going with older.

I ponder just how spoiled I've become since I became an international fly guy. I like my planes new, my food hot, and my IFE big.

I just went to use my cell in flight... I only got a call from the flight attendant to turn the phone off! At least I have wifi so I can catch up with you. I'm halfway through my us visit and enjoying the winter weather! Ok time is running out! Did I mention I like my inflight wifi cheap... This one isn't :)
