Here is a great and terrible thing about the universe: There is always more to explore, always more to claim, always more to possess, always more to leave one unsatisfied. It was enough to make Yellow Diamond twitch, restless from too many years spent on her throne. As a Diamond, she was granted the privilege and responsibility of delegating tasks to other gems; she rarely had the chance to do anything with her physical form. Normally, that was acceptable, for physicality was beneath her. She wasn’t a common pebble.
But…
Sometimes…
She wasn’t bored. She was simply…such a high being that she sought to break through to greater levels of control. So when a curious glitch on her monitor sent her into a new physical plane, she found herself embracing it.
For about six picoseconds. Then, a blast of air forced tiny grains of matter into her eyes, and she decided she was done.
Infuriated, Yellow Diamond waved a hand in front of herself, ready to access her interface and define the substance that had half-blinded her. A holographic screen phased in front of her before shorting out almost instantly. You cannot be serious. More attempts yielded the same result, until the screen did not appear at all, even through her backup technology.
She had not arrived through any vessel. She had not discussed her decision with anyone. The technology she kept at hand was currently proving useless.
This wasn’t a disaster yet, but the Diamond was irritated—especially as more of that something hit her face. She’d seen similar substances on other planets, granular little rocks that left prints under her feet. It didn’t seem to be of particular use to her—only a nuisance in a foreign land.
In other words, the grand bossy princess had gotten sand in her eye, and she didn’t know it. She was going to have to find someone if she was going to get anywhere else in this godforsaken desert land.
