Once, a Sunfire soldier ended up near the Silvergrove. Ethari found her weak and delirious from a venom orchid bite and brought her back to the tree house. He nursed her back to health, and he even crafted her an enchanted sunbox to give her more sunlight while she recovered, since the Silvergrove is enchanted to have a more moonlit feel even at midday. She thought it was quite impressive. I mean, I did too--everything Ethari makes is amazing--but to impress a Sunfire, you must be truly skilled and practical. And that’s my husband to a T.

A few days later, her commander waded into the Moonshadow Forest in search of her, and he couldn’t find her--obviously, we have concealment spells everywhere, but the whole village could hear him storming around and shouting. He was scaring the wildlife and disrupting our peace and quiet. I offered to go out and speak to him on her behalf, but she decided it was time to leave, so Ethari and I both escorted her out to greet him. And she was so enchanted with his sunbox that she asked if she could keep it to show the other Sunfires. Ethari only laughed and said the box had always been hers.

We approached her commander a mile outside the village, and the moment he saw us, he became intensely upset. He stalked up to his soldier and demanded a string of answers without giving her any time to reply or explain. I could understand his frustration in not knowing what had happened to her, possibly even blaming her for failure, but dressing her down in front of others like that? Especially elves of a different culture? Even when Rayla doomed my mission and everyone on it, I didn’t rip her apart like that.

She did try to explain anyway, and offered the sunbox as both peace offering and explanation for her failure to report on time. And her commander threw it against a tree and broke it.

I was furious, but I learned long ago to control my dark side. Ethari, not so much, since he barely has one. He planted himself between the soldier he’d saved and her irate commander, balled his hands into fists, bared his teeth, and said, “That’s enough. Another word out of you, Sunshine, and I’ll plant you like an umbrella tree.”

Please note, little shadow, that umbrella trees grow with their roots in the air and their leaves underground. Ethari was offering to plant the Sunfire commander headfirst into the dirt. so hot btw

I put a hand on his shoulder and said I’d escort the commander out of the forest, but the Sunfire took one look at me--an assassin--and decided that he’d rather have Ethari escort him instead. 

And escort him Ethari did. He tossed him over his shoulder and carried him like a sack of potatoes the whole way to the edge of the forest. I know because I was tracking him from the trees, just in case he needed me. But he didn’t. He walked with his recovering friend and chatted easily with her as if nothing in Xadia were the matter. He left the commander at the edge of the treeline with a stern look that made the elf take a step back involuntarily. Then he finally thanked Ethari for caring for his soldier, and he told her that she was due for a promotion. They left in a much better mood, and Ethari and I walked home together.

Never be cruel where Ethari can see you. He doesn’t like it, and he’ll do whatever it takes to balance you out. Even if that means your feet won’t touch the ground for ten miles.
