âYouâll find another muse somewhereâ
Role reversal AU: Infected Sun
Moondrop was never the social one. He tended to stay to the shadows due to the sensitivity of his light detector- besides, he was always happy helping the kids to sleep, and nothing more.
But then they took Sun- his Sun- and replaced him with thisâŚthisâŚmonster. The moment he came back online after his visit to Parts & Services, Moon knew something was wrong. He was no longer the jovial, cheerful animatronic that Moon took pride in calling his brother. No, now he was unhinged, cruel and insensitive. He tried to reason with whatever this was, but all it did was call him names and snap rebukes at him.
Now, Moon was never the type to just give up. He was stubborn, which could be confused for determination. But this time around, he found himself too tired to push this thing any further. Every word he shared with it made him more and more exhausted. He never got this feeling with Sunny before.
None of this was the worst part, however. The worst part was thatâŚthis faker knew. Knew the nicknames that Sun called Moon, remembered the memories that they shared, all the times that they laughed together. Each time it poked and prodded at their memories, Moon could feel himself growing weaker under the weight of itâs presence. As time went on, he felt like he would snap in halfâŚlike he wanted to snap in half. Anything to get this shadow of his best friend to leave him alone. Even so, Moon knew that he couldnât abandon the daycare like that- not with all the kids relying on him to keep this monster in check.
Moon started to keep the lights off more and more, until finally he taped the light switch down so that none of the children could mess with it and accidentally turn the lights back on. Nap time lasted a couple of hours instead of only one. Moon learned to play with the kids like Sun used to. Everything changed, and Moon couldnât help the sinking feeling inside him with every decision that he made.
Oh, Sun would be so upset.
The daycare a mess, the kids crying, wailing for Sunâs comfort. Comfort that Moon just couldnât give.
âSee, Moony? Iâm the face of this place. Iâm why itâs here. Not you.â
The dark jester finds himself breaking under that weight this time. He feels the panic building in his chest as another one of the kids breaks down in tears, feels the tears forming in his eyes as Sunâs shadow taunts him into submission.
âYouâll never be Mr. Sun!â
âCome play with us! Youâre always so boring!â
âWhere did Mr. Sun go?â
âWhy are you here?â
âWhy is it so dark? Mr. Sun never has it like this during the day!â
So many voices, haunting him like rabid ghosts. Why canât he just get some peace and quiet?? What he do to deserve this?!
He faintly hears laughing, raising in volume until itâs all Moon can hear. Cackling, sharp and sinister, filling his head like cotton. It muffles the world around him, tunes out the crying and screaming of upset children. He stumbles backwards, eyes wide, internal heat warnings cramming his vision. The kids step towards him like a sea of impatient hands and tearful glares. The laughing hurts now, hurts because why wonât it go away, why canât he hear anything else, why, why, why-
Then, silence.
He looks around wildly, hands shaking as he grasps tightly at the barrel in his hands. Black tears drip down his face, staining the chipped paint beneath.
âThere you are! Like I was saying, if you wouldâve listened, I think that the barrels should be brightest colors on top and darker colors on bottom-â
âCan you just shut up?!â
Sunâs Shadow falls silent, surprised by Moonâs outburst. Heâs never lashed back like that. Heâs always been quiet and tolerant of this thingâs antics, hiding his annoyance behind chores and other busying things.
Moon is still shaking, barrel having been discarded in favor of wrapping his arms around himself instead.
âCome on, youâre the big scary Moon! You look pathetic, standing there, shaking like a chihuahua!â
Itâs voice is sharp, almost defensive. It seems to have been put on edge by Moonâs interruption.
âI know that, you know? I know how useless I am, okay?! You took my brother, my reputation, my life- but, whatever, take my confidence too. It doesnât matter anymore. Iâm shutting the daycare down until you get removed.â
Did he really just say that?
âYou wouldnât. The kids are all you have left.â
âNo. Sunny was all that I had left, and now, heâs gone. I donât even have myself anymore. You took that from me, too.â
Moon feels something shift within him, as if The Shadow recoiled.
âCome on, Moony, arenât we friends?â
Moon lets out a sharp laugh, insanity bleeding through the edges of his tone. It raises in volume until the daycare is only filled with his synthetic laughter and static-ridden cackles.
âYOUâRE NOTHING BUT A MONSTER! WHY WOULD I BE FRIENDS WITH A MONSTER?!â
The Shadow sits in disturbed silence.
Moon crumbles like a bombed building, falling to his knees in a trembling mess on the padded floor.
âYou took him. You broke him. Iâm not friends with traitors.â
And with that, his systems start to stir, errors crowding his vision. He faintly hears the thingâs scream of terror, voice raising into a wail as it begs to know whatâs going on, why Moonâs doing this.
Mechanisms click against each other inside them, gears melting under the intense heat that slowly becomes unbearable for the parts inside and out. He lifts his head, catching the red glint of eyes from the daycareâs front doors.
The world freezes around him.
It finally seems to click in his head.
What is happening?
âSHEâLL PULL YOU IN TOO!! MOON, RUN!!!â
Moonâs eyes widen, feet moving of their own accord as he scrambles backwards, panic flaring up inside of his already-failing code.
That voice, thatâŚ
THAT was Sun. HIS Sun.
His hand slips out from beneath him, and then the world goes dark.
