Last Sunday morning we took a ferry from Istanbul to the Prince’s Islands, so called because during the Byzantine and Ottoman empires various royalty were exiled here. Nowadays the islands serve as summer homes for the wealthy, but nevertheless made a wonderful outing for a warm and sunny day in March. No cars are allowed on the islands- instead, horses pull carriages along cobblestone streets lined with white colonial-looking houses, or tourists rent bicycles for a trip around the island (my favourite sighting was of the two American hipsters vlogging as they shot past on a tandem bicycle). It felt as though we were far away- in a place of years past and certainly closer to the equator. Across the water we could see cargo boats waiting to enter the mouth of the Bosphorus - and beyond: Istanbul, veiled through a gray shroud.
