My first gaming anything was about two and half years ago, when my wonderful boyfriend first invited me to some small tournament held in a gaming cafe in Plainfield, NJ. I remember feeling nervous and excited. Nervous because I've never been to any event like it; excited because I grew up loving video games, even though I've always sucked. Every where I looked, the boys clearly outnumbered anyone female. There were maybe four of us in total. One of them was a woman who worked at the cafe. It felt really nice though, to be a part of something the love of my life enjoyed to do in his free time. Today, my love and I are in Philly at the Summer Jam 9 at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center. It was quiet when we first got here. Slowly, the crowd grew and here I am sitting on the carpeted floor typing up this experience among a now electric and roaring crowd. There are maybe thirty women max, watching our friends or boyfriends gaming in the seats set in the center of the hall. Gaming stations on all sides of the room. Gaming tournaments have been around for some time, and before I met my Richard, I never knew how large these events were. These guys take over every venue they are hosted, sporting gaming shirts and their remotes. It smells terrible in this room, as if these guys forgot to hop in the shower before arriving. But they're so happy, I can't even be mad that a room full of guys smells like this. I guess it's just the stench of gamer balls that gives these events their touch of magic... Anyway, if you've never been to one of these, give one a shot. You might be presently surprised. Or you might be extremely bored out of your mind. I'm always on the border. I am always happy to do things with my babe, but this might be a twelve hour ordeal... We'll see how I feel round six pm.
