This week we said goodbye to Leah and James, our two summer interns. We are so grateful for all the brought to the Museum this summer. They helped in many capacities the last two months, including but not limited to, helping visitors, photographing birds, leading pop-up soap carving, collecting natural history information on the bees and other insects on the property, painting a photo-op board (more on that later), leading an insect walk, modeling for the gift shop (swipe for photo), and talking about birds! We wish them both luck as they move forward with school and in their careers. #ComeBackAndVisitUs #gratitude ##SummerIntern #SummerInternship #WeHaveHats (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTCsk6rL6yH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Getting to Know...Selani Thomas
Welcome to NYPA’s 2021 Summer Intern blog series. Each week, we’ll feature several interns working across our various sites and departments. Read on to learn more about our interns and why they chose to work at NYPA.
Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes in 2021. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.
Selani Thomas, a rising senior at Hunter College, hails from Brooklyn, NY and is interning in our Environmental Studies group.
Currently majoring in Geography, she’s long had a passion for earth sciences. She picked a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concentration, seeing it as an amazing tool to pursue her future career. Among her favorite classes are those in her GIS studies – despite the challenges, “I learn so much just from spending time with data and mapping. I do love my Pollution classes as well”.
Selani chose to work at NYPA because she found the opportunity to work at a green energy company exciting. In the future, she hopes to be working with an incredible team, “pushing some incredible goals in the green energy space or leading a project of my own”. Within the energy industry, she’s interested in trends surround smart infrastructure – grids, cities, factories and houses, and how they integrate within today’s infrastructure. “I believe with the help of developing tech, we can shift our way of living to truly be more efficient and interactive while also fostering innovation within waste, consumption, and more.”
When asked about the future of women in STEM fields, she hopes to see more women leading teams and becoming the voice for solutions within tech and science. “As a women in STEM and in professional environments, I feel as though sometimes we can be undermined in our roles and industries when we are often capable of either the same work ethic or more. I believe we offer unique perspectives and diversity of thought that has the potential to bring innovation into a quickly changing environmental and digital landscape that we as global citizens must continue to nurture”.
Outside of work, she enjoys biking around New York City, and looks forward to surfing when she goes on vacation this summer. She recently took a trip to Shenzhen, which is a major tech city within Guangdong, China. “I truly enjoyed learning about how this city is rapidly growing and how different businesses are making the drive towards innovation within tech”.

Introducing NYPA’s Interns
Welcome to NYPA’s 2018 Summer Intern blog series. Each week, we’ll be featuring several interns working across NYPA’s various sites and departments. Read on to learn more about our interns and why they chose to work at NYPA!
Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes in 2018. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.
Oleksiy Simanov is interning with the Mechanical Maintenance Department at NYPA’s 500MW site in Queens. He is from Brooklyn, NY and is pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from the New York Institute of Technology. He said that his favorite classes have been his engineering labs because he finds building circuits fun, and he is most interested in sustainable and clean energy, especially from the sun. He enjoys working at NYPA because he appreciates how he is working to produce an extremely important product: electricity. In five years, Oleksiy hopes to be working as an Electrical Engineer in the energy industry.
Justin Davis is an Engineering Intern with the Transmission Department at NYPA’s Blenheim-Gilboa site. He is from Richmondville, NY and is currently pursuing degrees in both Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University. He said his favorite classes there are Statistics because it “provides a good foundation to many aspects in most engineering disciplines” and Geographical Information Systems because it is a “great tool that has many applications from environmental research to urban planning and building.” Justin also explained that he finds energy storage and research regarding renewable power the most interesting aspect of the energy industry, and he most enjoys working at NYPA because he appreciates how “NYPA has invested into expanding its renewable energy ties in order to provide even more clean power to the State of New York.” Justin is also a cadet in Clarkson’s Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Clarkson, and in five years he hopes to be working as a commissioned Engineer Officer in the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard. He also strives to hold a civilian job in the energy or utility industry, and to have completed a Master’s in Civil Engineering.
Allison Wright is an Instrumentation and Controls Intern at NYPA’s Blenheim-Gilboa site. She is from Frankfort, NY and is currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University. She said that there, her favorite class has been Energy Conversions because she was able to learn the material with both lectures and hands-on components, and she is fascinated by how complex it is to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, despite the fact it is so often taken for granted. Allison also explained she enjoys working at NYPA because she is able to learn something new every day, and in five years, she hopes to have a steady job and a nice home.
James Brnik is a Civil Engineering Intern at NYPA’s Niagara Site. He is from Buffalo, NY and is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering from SUNY Buffalo. He said his favorite class so far has been Soil Mechanics because it was “very practical and easy to relate to your everyday life,” and that he finds producing clean energy the most interesting part of the energy industry. James also explained that he enjoys working at NYPA because his coworkers are “very welcoming and appreciative,” and in five years, he hopes to have a stable job either in the transportation aspect of civil engineering or at NYPA.
