summary: Your friend’s wish was for you to find her brother if anything happened to her, so he could take care of her daughter and you, but maybe his surroundings were not the most safe.

“And, the last but not less important. Congratulations to you all. It’s been a long way, you were focused, dedicated and I know it was not easy, but it’s done already. You all did it. Wasn’t it fast?” Your professor pause for a moment, seeming to get emotional. “Congratulations, it was deserved. See you all at the graduation day”.

That’s how your last day at college ended.

Like your professor said, it was not an easy path, you spent too many nights awake, studying for finals, sadly it was not once that you had bad grades. There were times you felt like giving up, like you were not made for this. But you did it. You should be proud of yourself. 

It was hard to make friends again, you were the new girl, skipping the first year you already studied, and a couple years older than them, but people became so receptive and it was like you were with them since the beginning. 

Back there, you were scared that you were making the wrong choice and would regret it later. It was the very opposite. You were never so happy. 

“Hey, Y/N! Were you leaving without us?” Your friend, Gaby, called you when you reached the door. 

“Sorry.” You laugh, waiting for them. 

“So… What should we to do celebrate before the official one?” Your other friend asks you both. 

“Do you have any plans with your boy already?” Gaby asked you. 

“Uh, I don’t know yet. I’ll text you later”. 

You reached the gate and tell bye to your friends. 

You were so glad about your decision. That lead you exactly where you were. 

“Auntie!” You feel little arms around your legs and your smile grows bigger. 

“Baby. What are you doing here?”

She giggles, not letting you go. 

“I came to see you”. 

“Should’t you be at school right now?” You look at her, with severe eyes, but a warming smile. 

“Daddy said I could skip class today. I’m not lying, auntie.” She looks at you with her big round eyes. 

Jude still looks a lot like Junmyeon, just like when she was a baby, but her eyes… They were Chanyeol’s. She was so beautiful, so tall now. Thinking about it brought tears to your eyes. Your baby was so big now. Eight years. So much happened. 

“Where’s your ride, Jude?” 

You look around, trying to find her uncle. 

“Wondering about me? You were so caught up on Jude, I felt a little bit forgotten here.” Junmyeon said, making drama. 

Jude laughs at her uncle’s pout. 

“What’s the occasion? Why you both came to pick me up? I could meet you at home.”

“What do you mean? Your last day at college is not important enough for you? And to think that I even cancelled a meeting to do this.” 

You smile at your boyfriend before kissing him. 

“Let’s leave. We need to eat something before I take her back to school.” 

“Can we have ice cream and cake later?” Jude asks, jumping inside the car. 

“You had sore throat just two days ago.” You remind her.

“Let her do it, just today.” Junmyeon asks you, too. 

“Please auntie, I promise I won’t get sick again”. 

You laugh, sensing you lost this battle. 

“I can ask my dad. He will let me eat ice cream, anyway”. 

“She will sleep there, so we can celebrate.” Junmyeon explains to you, and you don’t miss his wink. 

Meri couldn’t have choose a better father. Jude and her father got so closer, he even suggested living with her once, but it would be hard with his lifestyle and raising her alone. Kids need attention, sadly, he wasn’t really prepared for that yet. 

She lived with Junmyeon and you, and on weekends stayed with him. He were there at every big moment of her life. Of course Jude missed her mother, more than she tells you, but all of you (even Junmyeon’s friends) were there for her.

Junmyeon and you were together. Officially, for years, even introducing parents already happened. You didn’t really think it would work out, what happened before really scared you, but it was all in the past now. 

He was not perfect, and it was hard at the beginning, but everything was solved. You both had to give in, adapting yourselves, growing together. Learning with each other. 

You were happy. Even your family could notice it. 

This was your family. 

There was a time you had bad feelings for Meri. It took a while for them to leave your heart, but now you could only be thankful for her. You missed her. A lot. She should be here, raising her daughter, with Chanyeol. Being happy. Doing what she most wanted.

But that’s not something you should focus. What happened, already happened. 

Your main focus now was enjoying this happiness the most you could, because you made the right choice. 

They were the right choice.

The drive back home was silent, except for sounds Jude would eventually made. Every time it happened, Junmyeon would stop reading the journal and pay her attention, earning a giant smile from her. 

That made your heart melt, and you caught yourself smiling to him more than you used to.

You could also notice, every time Junmyeon would play with her, Chanyeol would be looking at the back sit. 

All this time, he was so close but so far. You wondered if he had his doubts, and how he would react when the truth come out. You were only sure that he wouldn't be happy. 

“Thank you for keeping the truth right under my nose.” 

A shiver ran your body when you remembered what happened to the guy that knew who killed Meri. Junmyeon wasn't in danger, right? 

What about you? You just found out. He wouldn't blame you too, right? 

“Are you okay, Y/N?” Jongin asks, looking at you through the rearview mirror. 

You glance Junmyeon before answering. 

“Sure”. 

Chanyeol entered his house in silence. He was hungry, but declined when you asked if he would like to stay and have dinner with Junmyeon and Jongin. He couldn't handle being next to Junmyeon more than necessary. 

Something was off. Really off. 

He only said they would be taking stuff the baby and Y/N needed, but he came back with notepads that he was sure belonged to Meri, looking way too suspicious. 

Chanyeol only agreed to go so maybe he could feel closer to Meri, but when they finally got there, his courage was vanished. His ache only grow. 

This past month was like torture for him. He couldn't even sleep, only after being completely exhausted, which would lead him to sleep for a whole day straight. He was doing so many mistakes at his job that Junmyeon even suggested him to stay at home and cure his bruise before coming back. That they all would understand. That everyone was worried about his mental health. 

But what they didn't knew… Staying at home was worst. 

When Meri said she couldn't handle being in this world he lived, he thought he could die from being heartbroken, but he was fine. Alone, but fine. 

When he was told that Meri died, he was sure he could die from that pain. Maybe that’s what is happening to him. He was losing control and near to his own death. 

Shooting the informant was not part of his plan, but he lost his mind. Those words were too painful. He wondered how Junmyeon heard all that without feeling his own heart boiling. 

“And that kid…” He said. 

Chanyeol didn't regret what he did, even tho he should. Not even Junmyeon’s scold made him feel less sorry. He wasn't the kind of guy that would choose violence, but he was becoming one to. 

What he regretted was killing him before he finished speaking. There were so many questions the guy could have answered. 

But that one sentence was bothering Chanyeol these past two days. 

He was talking about Jude? Why? 

Why would someone hurt Jude? 

Unless…

Unless Baekhyun were right. After the funeral, he said something was suspicious about Y/N and Jude coming back with them. 

At that time, Chanyeol didn't care. He totally believed about her being friends with Meri and needing protection. Until he discovered she was living with Junmyeon. That was odd. 

Baekhyun truly believed Jude was related to Junmyeon. That she could be a daughter from a one night stand.

At that time, Chanyeol laughed. He would know it. But now, seeing how distant and secretive Junmyeon was being, he started doubting himself. 

How well did he know his friend? 

Maybe Baekhyun was right. And what the informant tried to say would make sense. Make sense on why Jude could be a target too. 

It was extremely hard seeing the baby, as hard as it was looking at Junmyeon. They both resembled Meri. 

“Bullshit.” Chanyeol mumbles, serving himself one glass of whiskey. The bottle was almost reaching its end, he would need to buy more, all his stock was consumed. 

There was no way, or reason, Junmyeon would make it a secret. And involve Meri. She would tell him. 

When the glass was almost touching his mouth, Chanyeol stopped, remembering a thought that crossed his mind when he first saw the toddler at the funeral. 

She looked so much like Meri that he wished he was receiving news that she married someone else and had kids. That would be way less painful that burying her. 

There would be no reason for Junmyeon to hide an illegitimate child. There would be no reason for Meri to go live away to help raising the kid. And no reason for him not to know. 

Unless… Unless. 

He left his glass fall on the floor, breaking and dirtying it. Just like his heart was. 

He needed to talk with Junmyeon, before concluding anything. 

No. 

He needed to talk with you. He was not sure if Junmyeon would be honest, if he was being honest this whole time, but he knew you would say. You could be pressured and be scared of him, ratting everything out. 

Chanyeol left his apartment, not even caring about turning the lights off or locking the door. He had enough lies. 

Jongin and Junmyeon were at his office, talking about the journal you found, while you were preparing the dinner, when Chanyeol arrived. 

The hard way he knocked the door, scared you, but when you saw his figure stating there, you opened without even thinking. 

“I’m just finishing it. I’m glad you changed…” 

You stopped talking when he pushed you back inside, his pupils were extremely dilated. 

Shit. 

“Where’s Junmyeon?” His voice was cold. 

Shit. Shit. Shit. 

“He’s at his office. With Jongin”. 

“Before I go talk to him, I have one question for you. Is Jude your daughter?”

“My… What? No.” You straighten your back. “I’m her nanny.” You feel like you should say something. “Chanyeol, I’m sorry. I was told today…” You pause, seeing him lose his balance. 

Chanyeol leans in the wall. The possibility was not even close to it being real. He felt like throwing up, but not having energy for that. Tears were falling from his eyes and air was too thick for him. He can’t breath. 

“Junmyeon!” You scream, getting desperate. You can hear Jude starting to cry in the kitchen, but you can’t focus on it now. Chanyeol looks like he’s about to pass out. “Junmyeon! Jongin!” You scream again. 

When they appear in the hall, Chanyeol looks at them. The frighten leaves his eyes, giving space to angry again. 

“How could you…” 

Jude’s screams were only getting louder. 

“Let’s talk in my office. Please. I’ll explain everything for you, Channie.” Junmyeon says calmly. You notice he used a pet name. That was the first time you heard him talking this softly with any of them. 

“Explain? What makes you think what you did have an explanation? And you Jongin, you knew this whole time? Who else was fooling me? Am I a clown or something?” 

“Let’s talk there, Chanyeol.” Jongin asks, grabbing his arm and pulling him with them. 

He didn’t fight to stay there, just let himself be carried by Jongin. Your heart ache seeing how hurt Chanyeol were. 

You finally went after Jude, and realized that would be another dinner alone. 

When you woke up, the house was silent and there was no sign of the three boys. Not even the food you prepared yesterday was touched by them. 

You knocked Junmyeon’s door to check if he was there and open it a little bit when there’s no response, but the room is empty. Only Jude being your company. 

Around the afternoon, Baekhyun appears with Jongdae, as usual. By their face, you know that they already heard the news. 

“He crashed in my house.” Baekhyun answers your unvocalized question. “I confess this didn't cross my mind”. 

“I also never thought Meri would hide a child. She loved him so much.” Jongdae tells him. 

“You think she was wrong?” You question them, feeling the urge to defend Meri. You totally understand her side. “I don’t think she was. She was scared, so she left. If she told, he wouldn’t let her leave.” 

Baekhyun plays with Jude, that’s on your lap. 

“You think Chanyeol was the real reason Meri left?”

“She was scared of what it meant being with him. What could happen to Jude if she stayed”.

Jongdae chuckles. 

“She was scared of Junmyeon.” Baekhyun tells you, there’s no hint of joke on his voice, something you haven’t seen since when you first met. “The very same man you’ve been living and falling for, every day. She was so scared of him that Chanyeol had no option but to agree with her leaving. He was the one that told her that she should make Junmyeon think that he was helping her. Of course, at that time, Chanyeol didn’t even have a clue that she was pregnant, and maybe not even Meri knew it”. 

Yes, she did.

Junmyeon said that she wanted to leave because of her baby. Was he lying to you, or Baekhyun was?

Maybe them all have been lying to you. You didn't know what to believe, nor if you should discover. You were caught up on this mess, and it was hard to see how you could leave it without leaving Jude behind.
