Newark (October 22, 2013) – GlassRoots is thrilled to welcome BOYD SUGIKI back to Newark!   On February 1 – 4, 2014, BOYD SUGIKI will teach a four-day master glassblowing workshop on goblets.  This is the first time that he has offered a goblet workshop for the public on the east coast.

  Goblets

By deconstructing the goblet into manageable sections, students will work towards refining each part of the goblet.  Day one will focus on blowing tops and making various shaped feet, with dedicated practice time to working on avolios.  Day two the emphasis will be on attaching feet to simple tops as well as finishing them on the punty.  Continuing onwards, the latter half of the workshop will cover stems, building the goblet off the pipe and garage use.  More general topics such as working thin and understanding heat will also be addressed as they apply to goblets.  Other goals will be gaining confidence and working efficiently.

  About the Artist

Boyd Sugiki started working with glass at Punahou High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.  He has a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts, and a MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Boyd has had solo shows at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu and at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner.  His work is included in many collections including the Honolulu Academy of Art, Hawaii’s State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Museum of Northwest Art, and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.  In addition to exhibiting his work, he has taught extensively throughout the United States and internationally.
