We’re Wanda; a feminist magazine based in Sheffield, England. We showcase the creative work of talented feminists in the area, although we accept submissions from all over the world! If you’re a writer, artist, photographer, musician, filmmaker, dancer, actor, or anything else, we want to hear from you! Email your submissions to [email protected] to be featured in print or online. Our current theme is “home”, which you can interpret any way you wish.

Wanda is a non-profit magazine, meaning we rely heavily on donations from our readers. In order to print our third issue, we are calling for small businesses that may wish to pay a small fee in exchange for an advert to be published on one of our pages. We distribute Wanda around Sheffield city centre, and can send copies in the post around the world. We have a growing online following of artistic feminists that may be interested in what you have to offer!

"The Spirit of Cairo in the Eighties" is a dreamy digital soundtrack album by the poet and thinker Samir Hamdi Qonbr, documenting the nostalgic streets, landmarks, and youth memories of 1980s Cairo using analog synthesizers. Produced and distributed by For 2 Percent Records. Through warm analog synthesizers, we trace the glowing neon lights reflecting on Al-Matareya's wet asphalt, the peaceful aristocratic leisure of the Croquet Club, the burning anticipation under the giant Stadium Lights, and the artistic mysteries captured through the Zoom Lens. We cruise with the joyful, rhythmic clicks of the Fiat 128 cassette player, and find comforting elegance in front of Roxy Cinema, concluding with the breezy golden-hour afternoon of Maadi Golf Club. Poignant, sweet, and gentle music that breathes with the domestic warmth of the past and the pure innocence of childhood.

يجسد هذا التراك الثائر كبرياء الروح المتمردة لـ "سلوى شاهين"؛ الغانية السابقة التي استردت شرفها بانتزاع مرير، وترفض بقوة السلاح والموت أن تعود مجدداً لتكون أداة ابتزاز قذرة في يد الأجهزة. يعبر اللحن، بمارش عسكري حاد وكمان منفرد حاد وتصاعد أوركسترالي درامي، عن غضبها العارم ورفضها الرضوخ لولاد الإيه؛ حيث تطلق صرخة عصيان أخيرة، مفضلةً تدمير حياتها المستقرة وتطليق زوجها لحمايته، والموت بكرامة وشرف على العيش كدمية مسلوبة الإرادة.

This defiant, powerful track scores the absolute rebellion and fierce pride of Salwa Shaheen, a former operative who reclaimed her dignity through intense struggle and strictly refuses to be blackmailed back into the machine of "official prostitution". Driven by a sharp military snare and a fierce solo violin, it captures her cold fury as she tears her own comfortable life apart, divorces her husband to protect his name, and wages a solo war against her handlers, choosing a dignified death over a puppet’s life.

Across 14 cinematic, instrumental tracks, we dive deep behind the camera's lens to score the silent, burning, and defiant human margins that the film reels left unrecorded in the souls of director Atef El-Tayeb's honest, struggling characters.

Through raw street instruments—the melancholic accordion, crying rababa, painful ney, rustic oud, and tense maqsoum rhythms—we trace the steps of Hassan gripping his bus steering wheel; the suffocating isolation of recruit Ahmed Sab' El-Leil on his watchtower; the quiet anxiety of Ali touching his hidden wedding ring; and the tender, hopeful taxi journey of Sayed and Horeya on New Year's Eve as dawn rises over the Nile.

A gritty, raw, and deeply honest cinematic score, woven with the dust of the pavements and the asphalt of Cairo.
