Alblanc Atelier: Frama’s Studio Store in Barcelona
This past week at Moonlight Audio, we had a client come in to record a piano tune he composed. This was a nice change of pace from the larger groups we had been recording lately, because we were able to do so much with just a single instrument. Miking wise, we used one Soyuz tube mics and the SM81 to record mainly the low-mid and high end of the piano. We also took the bottom compartment off to expose the strings in order to capture more of the instruments sound using the AKG D12 VR. Even though this mic is a kick drum mic, it could pick up the extremely low frequencies of the piano.
For room mics, we used a single AT 5047 as a mono and two Blue Kiwis in blumlien for the stereo sound. The miking combined with recording the dampened sound separate from the open strings, the sound of the piano ended up extremely rich and clean, even without EQ. The piece had a sort of old time jazzy feel, which we embraced by running it through a tape machine, and recording it back into logic. This gave the song more of a high-fi feeling, and added tape hiss, adding nice atmospheric aspects as well.
