Studio Ilio - Experiments from recent project ‘The Soft Side of Steel’
More pieces from the Studio Ilio ‘Hot Wire Extensions’ collection 2015.
Studio Ilio
I had the pleasure of working with Seongil Choi & Fabio Hendry recently, the founders of Studio Ilio, London. Recent graduates from the Product Design MA at the RCA, the pair have been working on an ingenious use for the nylon powder waste from 3D printing.
Titled ‘Hot Wire Extensions’ they have created a series of 12 stools that are sculptural in nature, but organic to touch.
Hot Wire Extensions uses nichrome wire and a material mixture of nylon powder and sand. By heating up the nichrome wire, the surrounded material composite completely solidifies. The sand acts as a filler material as well as a heat conductor by distributing the heat around the wire. The nylon powder melts and bonds during the curing process the mixture to a solid body. Here is one of the portraits we shot in the guys studio, where they are surrounded by prototypes & experimental pieces. Below is my favourite piece from the studio shoot.
