PANIC! AT THE DISCO “Nothing can stop them! We asked the band at the height of their success how they’re feeling right now!”

Interviewer: First, please tell us which artists influenced you?

Brendon: I got inspiration from all kinds of bands. I really loved Third Eye Blind and Counting Crows. But it wasn’t just them, I also listened to a lot of film scores, instrumental music from movies.

Interviewer: Before you debuted with your first album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, you went through quite a period of hardship. Looking back on it now, please tell us how you feel about everything that led up to your debut.

Brendon: It really feels like it all happened in the blink of an eye. We were incredibly busy. But I’m grateful for everything. We’ve put our whole lives into making music. I’m incredibly happy that we’ve been able to achieve this much success, and I’m truly grateful to all of our fans.

Interviewer: At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” won the award for Best Video. The audience at the venue booed when it was announced, but did you expect that you would win? And how did you feel after receiving the award?

Brendon: I absolutely didn’t expect it. We hadn’t won in any of the other categories we were nominated in, so I thought we wouldn’t win this one either. When they announced that we’d won Video of the Year and our name was called, I honestly couldn’t believe it. Winning was an incredible honor, and it became a memory I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.

Interviewer: The newlywed groom who appears in the “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” video is an actor named Daniel Isaac. Apparently, that role was his professional debut. We heard that after appearing in your video, people on the internet started to learn his name, but is that true?

Brendon: No, I didn’t even know what kind of work he was doing. He was just someone who came to our video and ended up appearing in it, so maybe that could happen.

Interviewer: On the soundtrack to The Nightmare Before Christmas, you recorded a cover of “This Is Halloween”! Rather than changing the song drastically, it has a very melancholy arrangement, doesn’t it? What were you especially conscious of while recording it? And are there any hints in that song about what direction your next album might take?

Brendon: It was really fun covering that song. I’m also a fan of Danny Elfman, the composer of The Nightmare Before Christmas, so it was a really cool opportunity. As for what the next album is going to be like, we still don’t know yet, so I wouldn’t say this song is a hint as to what the first album’s follow-up will sound like.

Interviewer: Your stage shows have become increasingly extravagant, almost like the set of an opera, and your members’ fashion and makeup have evolved considerably as well! Your live performances have become completely different from the atmosphere you had around the time of your first album. Is there some kind of concept behind this? And how have audiences reacted?

Brendon: We approach every tour with a theme. We want to put on the biggest, best performance possible, something the fans will really enjoy. I think it’s a little different from the sort of thing you normally see at a rock show. No matter what country we’re performing in, we basically try to present the show in the same format. With the set, the backing dancers, and everything else, we want to create something that gives the fans a taste of a theatrical atmosphere.

Interviewer: During your performance on the main stage at the Reading Festival, a bottle thrown from the audience hit you directly in the face! You collapsed onstage, but after the audience called out to you, you got back up and continued the show. I was really moved by your determination to keep performing. I think a lot of the people who come to festivals and concerts are wonderful rock fans, but what do you think about people who behave like that?

Brendon: There are always troublemakers everywhere. There were 60,000 people at Reading Festival, and since there were also people there who had come specifically to see us, we weren’t going to let the stage go to waste. We just kept performing.

Interviewer: The coupling/B-side on the “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” single is a cover of Radiohead’s “Karma Police.” That was a surprising choice! Is there someone in the band who particularly likes Radiohead? And were there any other bands you considered covering?

Brendon: All of us love Radiohead. We thought that song would be fun to play as a band.

Interviewer: We’ve heard that you’ll begin work on your new album early next year. Will it be an extension of your first album? Are there any songs that you’ve already finished? Please tell us if you’ve tried anything new.

Brendon: No, nothing has been decided yet. We’ve only just started thinking about the next album. We’re at the point where we’re about to start working on it, so nothing has actually been completed yet.

Interviewer: You came to Japan this spring for PUNKSPRING! What left the biggest impression on you during your stay in Japan?

Brendon: It really was a crazy experience. It wasn’t any one particular thing; I think what left the biggest impression on me was simply getting to experience Japanese culture. There were things I’d never seen before, and things I’d never experienced before, so I’m really looking forward to coming back to Japan on our own headlining tour.

Interviewer: Finally, please give a message to your Japanese fans.

Brendon: Thank you so much for supporting us! We’re looking forward to seeing you again!
