The director of the chorus I'm in (who is an incredible conductor, maybe the best I've ever had) has a thing she says a lot that I like:
"Strong and wrong!"
It means that if you're unsure of your part, sing what you think it is confidently. That way, she can hear our mistakes and correct us.
Also, she trusts that when we get something wrong on stage, it generally doesn't sound bad, because it's usually something like singing the part of the person next to you who is in a different group, or singing the wrong note but it still works because you're just naturally used to harmonizing. So, if it's wrong but it doesn't sound bad, is it really wrong? We're performing, and the audience needs to see our passion and confidence in the music.
Of course, I do like to apply this motto to life in general. It's very helpful for a person with anxiety and/or low self confidence.

Directors would rather you make a strong bold choice that's wrong, than a timid safe choice. If you make a strong choice, at least you're making a choice and it is clear to everyone in the room that you've been working on your piece. Where as if you make a safe choice that only shows the director that you haven't been trying out everything on your own time. Which translates to them as not working hard enough, and you may get fired because of it. When you give too much, it is easier to take some of it away and polish it. If you don't give enough, the director can't and won't pull it out of you for the simple fact that it is a waste of their time.
