STARKĀ HASĀ DONEĀ ENOUGHĀ INĀ HISĀ LIFEĀ TOĀ BEĀ BLAMEDĀ FOR.Ā mistakesĀ heĀ hasĀ made.Ā situationsĀ heāsĀ gottenĀ himselfĀ into.Ā recklessĀ behaviorĀ becauseĀ heĀ couldnātĀ sayĀ noĀ whichĀ endedĀ inĀ lossĀ ofĀ lifeĀ andĀ soĀ muchĀ guiltĀ andĀ blame.Ā tryingĀ toĀ conveyĀ thatĀ toĀ aĀ soldier.Ā toĀ aĀ superheroĀ andĀ friend,Ā isĀ hard.Ā tonyĀ doesnātĀ thinkĀ steveĀ isĀ reallyĀ listeningĀ toĀ whatĀ heĀ isĀ saying.Ā starkĀ hasĀ spentĀ soĀ muchĀ timeĀ blamingĀ himselfĀ forĀ theĀ sinsĀ heĀ hasĀ doneĀ thatĀ heĀ refusesĀ toĀ allowĀ himselfĀ toĀ everĀ blameĀ himselfĀ forĀ thingsĀ thatĀ wereĀ outĀ ofĀ hisĀ control.Ā itādĀ beenĀ aĀ hardĀ lessonĀ toĀ learn,Ā butĀ tonyĀ finallyĀ hadĀ reachedĀ thatĀ point.
āaĀ minuteĀ doesnātĀ matter,Ā steve.āĀ harshĀ words.Ā heĀ shouldĀ treadĀ lightly.Ā Ā ātryĀ asĀ weĀ might,Ā weĀ canātĀ changeĀ theĀ past.āĀ thoughĀ theĀ avengersĀ hadĀ triedĀ before.Ā Ā āweĀ cameĀ hereĀ toĀ doĀ aĀ missionĀ andĀ thatĀ isĀ theĀ importantĀ part.Ā herĀ lifeĀ wasĀ valuedĀ butĀ weĀ canātĀ changeĀ whatĀ happened.Ā youĀ canātĀ tellĀ thorĀ toĀ flyĀ fasterĀ orĀ hulkĀ toĀ smashĀ harderĀ orĀ youĀ toĀ punchĀ quicker.Ā weĀ giveĀ everythingĀ weĀ haveĀ andĀ toĀ theĀ bestĀ ofĀ ourĀ abilities.Ā weāveĀ hadĀ theĀ hardĀ lessonĀ thatĀ weāreĀ notĀ perfectĀ andĀ invincible.Ā toĀ someĀ degree,Ā weāreĀ allĀ human.Ā humansĀ areĀ flawed.āĀ maybeĀ thisĀ isnātĀ theĀ bestĀ speechĀ butĀ tonyĀ inĀ unsureĀ ofĀ whatĀ elseĀ toĀ say.Ā Ā ādonātĀ blameĀ yourselfĀ forĀ aĀ situationĀ youĀ hadĀ noĀ controlĀ over.ā
There's a weight to the soldier that is hard to dispel. Even if they're not āā mistakes, not exactly, the perceived failure still rests heavily upon his shoulders. Ā He's listening, maybe, but not really HEARING.
It's not a crushing weight. It can't be, for him. He's gotta pick himself up, again and again, weight of losses heavy upon him āā and MOVE FORWARD. Because he can't stop. And he can be rattled, he can be shaken, but he has to believe that theyāre making a difference.
ā You don't know that. ā A flash of stubbornness, weary and frustrated, to the notion of a minute not making a difference, and he tosses the gloves down in a chair. It's a light toss, though, no anger behind it, no force. He glances upward to the lights overheard as though seeking answer, and takes a breath and lets his eyes fall after a moment, arms crossing over his chest. Ā
ā I tell myself every day every life matters. Every one of their lives. And I lost her, Tony. ā Blue eyes seeks Tony's, but then āāā they soften a little. They relent, they drop down, and he lets a breath go. He's quiet for a moment, though, and āāā he lets it go, even just a little. Ā ā Thanks. ā
