       curiosity of the straw hat bearer always rose at abrupt timings, unpredictable intervals -- like his actions in general, having surprised the swordsman since the day they met ( it’s hard for him now to believe in his very distinct memory of luffy blackmailing them at first engagement. luffy. blackmailing ) and being a trademark at this point. but he draws his attention to the question asked after the initial ( very brief ) confusion regarding the topic.

       and then a further low sound of being in thought. the three piece accessory were kept in place for a long time now, an unintentional sentimental attachment designated when he only intended them to aid in balance during meditation -- now, habitually extending to the rest of his activities. 

       the gaining of the piercings came before his current gold jingles though. the initial purpose is saved for a pair of earrings received during his stay at the dojo, a casual suggestion after a spar. before then, purposeful marks on the body weren’t ones he cared to focus on or even ponder upon, the thought to puncture such holes onto his body were seemingly a waste of time -- but the permanence soon drew its appeal. 

       his pain tolerance has always been high ( thanks, kuina ) so there was never any concern for pain. he hadn’t known there was meant to be pain til arriving to the place to get pierced, only to notably remember a customer’s tight grip on the chair, sweat drops present, tremors. the nervousness was swatted away from his thirteen year old mind and so, zoro recalls facing the needle with arms crossed, a defiant and resolute expression ( totally not nervous ) before the abrupt second of pain garners a flinch, two. but it was over quicker than he expected and from then on, he’s remained balance.

                         hurt ? not at all. it was just the abruptness,                               drawing out a reaction ... much like luffy.                                                                           just like luffy. 

                        ‘ only for a second. it happened pretty quick, ’ 

                               a shrug and then turning to the other with a                                returning sense of curiosity,

Unrestrained. Loud and airy and so FULL OF SUNSHINE, brightening the deck under the setting sun. The warble of music and singing twisted in the air, leaving the ship brimming with life despite the continuously late hour. Perfect.

All of his precious people gathered together, tangled among one another in a mockery of what one would call ‘proper’ dancing. It was CAPTIVATING. Nostalgic. The captain had always hoped to have such a close family, like the one he’d known from his youth. 

Calloused fingers brush against harsh straw, adjusting his beloved hat. In the minute movement he catches sight of a small body. Luffy is imitating those around him, the smile on his lips nearly putting the sun to shame.

He shakes his head, a breezy laugh breaking out as the kid once again trips over his own feet. There’s the executive decision to save Luffy from bruising himself up even more, so he calls out to him, all warm fondness.

“ Oi, Anchor, you wanna hear a story? ”

The sounds of birds cooing woke him up first. Humming, he climbed out of his hammock, the scent of something delicious reaching his nose. Faster than lightning, he dashed towards the room where the scent was undoubtedly coming from. Eyes sparkling from excitement and hunger, he threw the door to the kitchen of the Sunny open.

They were all there. Sanji was busy at the stove while the other Strawhats were already seated at the table. Chopper and Robin seemed to be discussing something, Zoro was still half asleep, Brook, Franky and Usopp were tinkering with a small tool and Nami was sipping a drink. His nakama.

Monsters! I think that ghosts are hard to prove as real, but honestly, I’ve seen people too close to being monsters.
