Is there something your favorite small fandoms have in common?
THANK YOU FOR ASKING I AM THRIVING IN THESE CONDITIONS
well several of them have the same creator!! The Fushigi Yuugi series, which includes the prequels Byakko Senki and Genbu Kaiden, Arata the legend and Ceres Celestial Legend are all mangas done by Yuu Watase. Discovered the og Fushigi Yuugi series in 2012, discovered Arata the Legend in 2013, and Ceres Celestial Legend sometime after, and never looked back. I could write a whole ass novel analyzing her works and themes by now. (Alice 19th is a recent new love of mine, also by her, so I don't know it as well, but I could definitely still try!)
The Wicked + The Divine and Arata the Legend both have "young people chosen by gods in a group of 12 make terrible decisions" as a common plotline. it's a bit of an oversimplification but it's still true lmao and I love every single one of those terrible decision makers
The OG Fushigi Yuugi, A Christmas Prince and Discovery of Witches are all romances with cringey but loveable main couples but I love them.
In all of them - minus Christmas Prince for obvious reasons - there's a lot of themes involving death and sacrifice. What it means to be alive, what it means to love. What you're willing to do for love. What kind of horrible decisions you can make and how, if, you can come back from it. Redemption and character growth is a big part in all these series, in both subtle and unsubtle ways.
Bonds between people is also a big theme in all of these works. All the Yuu Watase series - and Watase works in general - often have a theme of the power of love and friendship (and it hits me every time, I love it). The Wicked + The Divine is. a lot about what happens when you cannot develop healthy relationships because of your own issues (and things can only get better when you try to overcome those issues and form bonds with others). Christmas Prince - it's a romcom obviously love and friendship is a constant theme. A Discovery of Witches is, again, a love story, so that bond is literally saving the world, but also - more in the tv show than the books, unfortunately but still very noticeable in the books - the bonds between the de Clermont family, the Bishop family, and all the friends they make along the way are vital for saving the day in the end.

🐝 send me a fake fic title, and I’ll make up a summary for it!
Sersi wonders if she has more in common with the marble statues she says hello to every morning than with the humans she lives amongst. (Or, doesn't live. Which is exactly the problem.)
fake fic ask!
Fan Fic Writer Asks -- 2, 4, 5, 10, 11
2. Do you read/reread your own fics?
Yes! Absolutely! I wrote them for me, of course I reread them!
4. How many WIPs do you have right now?
Ones that currently exist on the page and have worked on recently? about 5.
Ones that exist completely within my head? millions.
5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?
never is a strong word but. Fem Anakin Skywalker having depressing ideas when it comes to sex and consent. not in a dark Anakin way but like... I don't want to get TOO into it but basically Anakin expects people to 1) not care about what she wants or 2) what's pleasurable for her.
10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
any time I've gotten comments or kudos on an OC-centric fic I'm so fucking pleased I don't know what to do with myself. Like! Someone really liked this new character I just threw into the established canon? Kissing them on the forehead.
also, small fandom plus dark content equals me thinking no one would read my heart is a stone, my body is not my own. so when people DID, and they LIKED IT, and they TOLD ME THEY LIKED IT, I was overjoyed.
11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?
well obviously! I have playlists for moods and characters and stories. if I'm writing something about them I have to have the music I assign them playing. or if I need a specific mood for a scene, I have to have that music going. especially for sad scenes. I have like. 5 playlists that are all variations of "setting a sad scene".
fanfic writer asks
Fanfic asks for the new year -- 2, 3, 7, 9, 11
2. Will you participate in any fandom exchanges or fic challenges, etc? I will definitely be running another regular round of @wipbigbang this year (and I'm probably going to do art again for the unclaimed fics and actually stay on top of it this time...whether I try finishing any of my WIPs is another matter) and I am currently running the International Fanworks Day Mini-Bang at the aforementioned big bang. I may do a fic for that as well, since it's really laid back.
I will also be finishing up the five prompts I got in December for @mollyappreciationweek at some point in the early half of the year (and I'll be running a February week-long round for Valentine's Day/Galentine's Day/Singles Awareness Day as well as another prompt-a-thon in December), and if you do Christmas In July again I'll take prompts. I may do the Spook Me Ficathon instead of Fictober...not sure. But I do plan on doing Spook Me this year after missing the sign-ups the last few years. And if I get enough participants, I'll do another round of @sherlollysecretsanta and make mod gfts as well (which reminds me...got to email participants in this round about the fic covers).
3. Do you anticipate writing for a new fandom this year? Which one? I do! One of the WIPs I'm bouncing around finishing for WIPBB is the Knives Out Cablanca fic you are letting me finish, and I've never written Knives Out before. As for all mine fics? It's not entirely new, but I tossed out a Marvel's What If...? fix-it idea for Peggy/1602!Steve which I might write, which will be my first time writing specifically for that show.
7. Will you change anything about the way you interact with other writers? I'm going to try and read more fic written by people other than @dreaminonao3 (I have a backlog of @sobeautifullyobsessed's fic that I'm going to read when I have a good chunk of time to donate to reading some of her long WIPs, and I have a ton of bookmarked fics across a bunch of different fandoms on my Firefox account), and make damn sure I comment and comment often. I'm also going to try and reblog more fic recs over on @mousedetective, where I have a bigger audience.
9. Short term goals… what do you hope to complete this week or in January? Since I finally seem to be over my food poisoning, this week I hope to do the mod gifts for Sherlolly Secret Santa and write at least one or two things for @greenskyoverme, including the newest chapter of "What Stork Brings." As for January? I want to get as much art done for the 2023 round of WIPBB that I owe as I can. I also want to write something new for my birthday on the 23rd, since I'm not expecting a whole lot this year.
11. Would you like to try any new fanfic genres or tropes this year? Not really? There isn't much I haven't tried at least once in the 25 1/2 years I've been writing fic.
Now, new ships, on the other hand? That I'm game for...

Fanfic asks for the new year -- 1, 3, 8, 24
1. Do you have a word-count goal for the upcoming year?
I've never had a word count goal in my life for fanfics and I don't intend to start now!
I just want to start writing at least a little every day. Word count doesn't matter to me, I just need to do something.
3. Do you anticipate writing for a new fandom this year? Which one?
UMMMM it doesn't really count as 'new' by now and I've written a fic for it before but maybe House of the Dragon? I just don't see the kind of stories I'm looking for and I need to provide it myself. If I finally continue with The Untamed/MDZS and Heaven Official's Blessing, them as well, most likely.
8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?
answered here!
24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”
"that author who caters to no one except her very specific niches" or something like that. follow up would be "that author who hurts every character she loves".
