That's because we SEE the first Demogorgon enter our universe in season 1. El opens the rip between Hawkins and the Upside Down in the isolation tank as Brenner pushes her further and further. And if this is a flashback to before 1983, and it's strongly implied in the teaser that it is, then that's before El ever opened that rip.

And we also see, explicitly, in s1 that they don't know what a Demogorgon is.

Number extermination makes (horrific) sense. So does number berserker mass death. But they'd have to totally retcon one of the biggest, and most explicitly shown, parts of s1 to make it a Demogorgon attack.

I think people were saying these kids died that night when El let loose the Demogorgon, just like that scientist.

my favorite fic of yours: so i keep thinking of untitled document?!! it’s hard to choose! you’ve written so many things that i’m really really in love with. and this probably isn’t your favorite—surely there are other fics you’ve spent more time on, put even more of your heart and soul into. those longer multichapter masterpieces that you’re the most proud of (future tense and paper tiger come to mind). but i read this one the most. (and usually modern aus don’t even catch my attention?!) just obsessed with the idea of them writing these unintentional turned intentional love letters and your execution of it. it’s obvious how deliberately you wrote those letters. deciding exactly what you wanted them to say and how you wanted them to sound. they’re amazing. i also love how stark the contrast between scenes is. how nancy can write “i was thinking about licking your spine when mrs. ingrahm called on me” and jonathan can say “i keep dreaming about you, nance, you won't leave me alone” but in person they’re so careful with each other. so little to say. the way things come together at the end is very satisfying, because of this. when the tension is finally resolved. i love that scene. the dialogue. it’s just a great fic, and is a go-to for me. when the love is requited but not yet acted on...i think that’s so exciting to read. you made it exciting to read. it’s a comfort fic but it almost makes you nervous, too, as you anticipate everything. and the characterization!! i’ll continue about this in the next part!

my favorite thing about you as a writer: i think you’re a really witty writer, but emotional as well. reading your stuff is...a visceral experience—is that the word i’m looking for? like everything you write gratifies the most inward part of me. it’s very natural. warm and funny, too. it’s like. good for the soul!! chicken soup fic! i don’t know what i’m saying. but i know that i’m so appreciative of you. and wow at your characterization. it’s really strong and so distinctive. i like that your jonathan is both reserved and charismatic. he is very secure in his identity, which comes through in the show some but it’s not as strong there. you write nancy in a special way, too. she is sincere and strong-willed. a perfect match to him. they’re so individualistic but also pretty obsessed with each other, and that’s something i relate to in my own relationship. i think the reason you are such a beloved writer is because not only do you know jonathan and nancy really well, as a reader it seems like you know me well too. what i want to read and feel.

my favorite scene you’ve written: just about every scene in besame mucho. they’re all so cute and just unforgettable really. especially the gym scene. “‘i don’t like it here,’ she admits, shaking off his grip and crossing her arms. ‘can’t we please just come back when they’re done?’ his eyes soften as he leans in, resting forehead against hers and nuzzling the tip of her nose twice before tilting his head and pressing his lips to hers. he kisses her slowly and delicately, hands cradling her face as if he’s holding something precious and infinitely breakable. even though she knows it’s coming her eyebrows still raise in surprise and then, to her genuine shock, she feels her knees grow weak.” i think about this fic so much!! actually i remember the very first time i read it as well. i had been at a cabin with my sister and some friends for christmas but got a cold halfway through. so i was stuck inside and got to read this! i will love it forever. another scene i really love is from your cafune prompt fic. it’s simple and soft and sweet.

I wasn’t sure if this meant of something I’d already written or what I’m working on, so I’m going with the same post-S3 guy, so surprise, here’s a sneak peek at something else that I am Stuck on.

Steve glances over, the sight of Robin in the front seat slightly jarring considering that for so long the seat had belonged to Nancy. She doesn’t seem out of place, though, in the back, arms crossed against the chill coming in from the windows he can’t bring himself to close even as the heat blasts, not willing to accept that fall has well and truly arrived.

“I went on a date with him once.”

I agree completely with you, I think we’re meant to see what Steve says to Jonathan to make him fight is just that, to make Jonathan fight. He says those horrible things out of hurt, anger, and jealousy. He does see Nancy as property through parts of s1, but that is not entirely who he is. He also genuinely cares for Nancy and cares about making things right with Jonathan (and Nancy; I have no doubt he meant to make things right with her whether she’d been with Jonathan or not). If we were meant to believe Steve genuinely thought those horrible things about Jonathan, then we wouldn’t have been shown him going to apologize to Jonathan.

I know Steve’s arc was rushed toward the end of s1, but in a Watsonian sense, Steve makes amends for his mistakes. The only reason we’re not shown Steve and Jonathan having positive interactions in s2 is because the duffers didn’t want to take the time to establish that, not because it’s not canonically possible. Steve and Nancy acted together to get Jonathan a new camera in 1x08. We don’t know who actually bought the camera, but it’s canon that Steve wanted Nancy to give Jonathan the camera, and thus agreed with her that he deserved a new one.

What I like about Steve’s character in s1 was dumped in s2 and that’s frustrating, but there’s nothing negating what I like about him either. He gets in with the wrong crowd, messes up horribly, hurts someone he cares about, fights and insults someone who doesn’t deserve it, and then acknowledges he fucked up and actually does something to apologize. I don’t think s1 didn’t show the apology because it didn’t happen. The new camera represented the apology.

Unspoken also is that Nancy told Steve she forgave Jonathan for the photos he took of her and that Jonathan didn’t deserve to have his camera destroyed. That conversation had to have taken place for the gifting of that new camera to happen. Unless people believe Nancy and Steve just didn’t communicate about what occurred before Steve came to Jonathan’s house that night, which I don’t believe. Steve and Jonathan had to have both acknowledged their wrongdoing for the new camera to get bought and for both Steve and Nancy to be involved in it.

panties is the worst and a plague upon all fanfiction, especially smut. a plague that writers are forced to use because there’s not enough synonyms and “underpants” isn’t a sexy word.
