Doesn't all of that glitter caked on everything pose a hazard to your respiratory system?
"My respiratory system is fine, thank you very much." Ruby huffed, "I'd be more worried about all the bacteria coating those smelly rocks of yours."Â

{Ace of Trades} || {Steven & Ruby}
The champion regarded the boy with a bit of apparent wariness etched upon his features, as though he wasnât entirely sure how to address his fascination with dealing with battles as though they were nothing more than a fanciful spectacle. It was true that every trainer initially found the limelight contagious and incorporated their fair share of flair into their battles, but eventually, in the midst of dire competition such as the one they now found themselves in, the need to be showy dissipated all together for the sake of putting all efforts towards conjuring oneâs prime strengths and defenses. However, knowing Ruby and his apparent need to make sure all of his companions were in pristine shape, even in the heat of the battle, he suspected that the road to having him neglect such tendencies was bleak.
"Yes, defensive and offensive measures alike are going to need to be determined," he murmured thoughtfully, not bothering to comment on his lack of enjoyment utterance, in case it sparked another debate between the starkly different individuals. Though his mind often trailed to its own abode of thoughts and ideas when posed with such a conundrum, he found himself peculiarly more concerned with the coordinatorâs wariness. Eying him quietly as the steel specialist reached forward and idly sampled various fruits, he recognized immediately how Ruby was trying to hide his anxiousness behind a cool exterior. He knew, because it was one thing they shared in common.
Sitting in the midst of somewhat disconcerting silence, he looked up and noticed how many of the duos had begun to shuffle out into the lobby or out onto the moonlit beach that lay just outside the exterior of the glass encased room. Listening as the rich, boisterous noise of their mingled conversations eventually faded, Rubyâs suggestion nearly startled him, as he had grown so accustomed to the stifling quiet between them.
With a small smile, he gave a single, concurring nod before reaching behind him for the jacket he had neatly positioned on the back of his chair. It was an odd request that the two of them remain holed up in their room when there was an entire island to explore, but he had always had an affinity for odd ventures, and perhaps spending time alone would help alleviate the tension and differences between them. âSure, that sounds like a great idea.â
- time skip to nerd slumber party -
As the two of them finally neared their room at the end of an upper story hall, Steven extracted the card key from his jacket pocket, blinking over his shoulder as he looked to assure that the coordinator was still at his side. The entire journey back, he had been oddly quiet, and while it was proving to be commonplace for them to not have much to chat about, he knew from previous encounters with the boy that he was anything but the silent type.
Turning back and opening the door, he held it open for the other, stepping in after him as the heavy thing locked into place. Welcoming the cool, air conditioned climate of the room with great gratitude, the young man quietly exhaled, shrugging off the jacket that was beginning to cling to his frame from the relentless humidity that claimed the night air. Walking over and draping it over the side of his bed, he unwound the scarf around his neck, an amiable smile crossing his lips as the Aron nestled in the center of the plush comforter awoke with an alert bark. âWell, hello to you, too,â he chuckled, leaning down as the tiny creature positioned itself upon his shoulder like a small, unusual parrot.
Straightening, he idly stroked the Pokemonâs smooth head as he expectantly looked to Ruby. However, the championâs demeanor was significantly less authoritarian than he may have usually appeared around league officials, Steven appearing more concerned that anything as he slowly approached his partner.
"Are you certain youâd like to discuss strategies at the moment? Forgive me if I seem a bit intrusive, you just seem a bit worried about this entire ordeal. If youâd like, we could focus our attention on other things tonight. You know, become more acquainted," he offered, not entirely sure how they would go about such an endeavour but suggesting it nonetheless.
Ruby spent a few moments picking at some of the vegetables on his plate, his thoughts flickering about to the idea of battling alongside Steven. Sure, Ruby had proven himself on multiple occasions, but the battles he had taken part in were pretty much required. Well, at least in Ruby's mind. The battles he had gone into were all forced; something he had to partake in given the situation. Ruby sighed a bit, knowing he couldn't back out of this competition. He didn't want to appear weak and, despite his somewhat selfish tendencies, he didn't want to let Steven down.Â
The coordinators thoughts broke as Steven spoke up, musing over his defensive position. He frowned slightly, though didn't say anything in return. They were here to enjoy dinner, and Ruby didn't feel like worrying over the matter just yet. They had a week or two to prepare, anyway. Worrying could be saved for later. More so hidden for later, but there was no way Ruby would ever let that be known. Not in front of all these people, and especially not in front of the champion he would be teaming up with for the extent of the tournament. Though, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't hold back the anxious glint in his eyes.Â
As pairs slowly made their way out of the dinning hall, Ruby's attention was once again caught by the various elaborate decorations that were once again view able. Despite enjoying the scenery, he was a bit relieved when Steven agreed to head back to the room. Everything was quite overwhelming, and he only assumed Steven was feeling at least a little bit of it, as well. It would be better for the both of them to get back and have some time to breath, really. Ruby stood, adjusted his tie, and flashed a smile to Steven. And soon, the duo departed.

The walk back to the hotel was quiet, but on the peaceful side. The sun was finally setting, creating a gentle atmosphere. The sunset created a lovely orange glow that reflected off of the modern buildings' surfaces. In the distance, groups of trainer meandered about. Ruby recognized quite a few of them, though didn't bother to mention anything about it. He was very content with the idea of being in the cool hotel room and away from the mess of a tournament.Â
Ruby watched as Steven moved to open the door, giving a light smile as the champion looked back at him. He walked in after Steven opened the door, giving a nod of 'thank-you'. He immediately moved to his closet, removing his out coat and tie and neatly hanging the articles up. Once that was done, the boy stretched out his limbs, taking in the fresh scent of the hotel room. He hadn't realized how hot he'd been until he was within the care of the air conditioner, and released a rather over dramatic breath. He walked over to the bed that had been assumed as his, and flopped down onto it with a small 'huff'. He looked over to Steven and his Aron, giving the Pokemon a toothy smile.Â
He didn't move from his spot even as Steven moved closer, enjoying the feeling of laying down after such a busy day. He listened as Steven suggested leaving the battle strategies for now, and gave a sigh of relief. He noticed the champion seemingly much more relaxed than normal; though, it was probably due to the fact that the fate of Hoenn currently wasn't in their hands. Yes, that was probably it. However, there was a hint of something else in Steven's tone. Concern? Worry? Ruby sat himself up, giving a small shrug. He still planned on masking his concern, as to not disappoint his partner. Ruby swore to himself that he wouldn't appear weak in front of him.
"The day has been a bit overwhelming, is all." Ruby admitted. He was glad Steven had made the offer to focus on other things, and nodded. "Getting acquainted sounds good to me. After all, I don't think Hoenn will be heading into ruins any time soon." he chuckled a bit, recalling the first time they met. When Ruby thought about it, him and Steven never really did have time to sit and have a normal conversation. So, where to start?Â
"What is it that girls call these things? 'Sleepovers'? How do they work?"Â
Dancing Pyres || Melody & Steven
She silently tredged along the tiles, walking between gravestones at a slow pace so she didn't disturb the other visitors. Her focus wasn't located on this floor though, so she slipped back out the other exit that was meant to lead higher up.
She'd heard that an elderly couple were the ones guarding the Red and Blue Orbs. Honestly she wasn't entirely sure she'd be allowed to get a glance at them at all. She wouldn't be surprised- they were sacred items, after all, and the powers they harnessed could be so easily abused by ill intent... If only the world didn't have to worry about such things, then the Orbs wouldn't have to be kept at a safe distance from the genuinely caring.
She felt cold, but she wasn't sure it was from the mist alone. She was fairly certain that her discomfort was being caused by spirits- she was in a graveyard of sorts, after all- but she didn't dare bring Ghaliya out for protection. Not against ghosts. If protection was what she needed she'd probably have better luck borrowing the abilities of one of the roaming Vulpix acting as guides for the departed.
She jumped as the sound of rustling grass surprised her, holding her breath and spinning on her heels toward the source.

"If you have opened this, then that means you are one of the lucky coordinators selected to participate in our all new tournament! We have selected only the finest coordinators and trainers to participate in this event. Take this fine opportunity to show all of Hoenn just how amazing you really are! It is a tournament so big that a whole new facility was built on an island, one that includes living accommodations and a shopping district for all your needs! Travel expenses are all prepaid, so come to Isle Lilycove: a beautiful island off the coast of Lilycove City! Tournament Rules will be explained upon checking into your hotel!"
It had been hardly expected. Initially thought of as a scam, Ruby was only able to confirm the invitation's legitimacy upon discovering that his father, as well as various other Gym Leaders, had been invited as well. Even Sapphire had received one. It didn't take much convincing for Ruby to decide that he was going to go. After all, it would be so very out of character for Ruby to pass up an opportunity to show off in a tournament that huge. So, he began packing immediately, and made it to the docks just in time to board the cruise to this new island. It had been a half-a-day journey, one that gave Ruby the chance to meet some of the competition. Indeed, they really had selected some of the top coordinators. Ruby was able to meet some of the famous coordinators of Hoenn, outside of a contest. He hadn't seen his father, probably due to the fact that he was on board with fellow coordinators. However, he didn't recall seeing Wallace, either. He figured the top-of-the-top trainers and coordinators probably all had their own rides.Â
The island, just as the invitation had said, was new and beautiful. It had all the latest modern technology. The buildings were large and very, very impressive. It was almost... intimidating. Ruby swallowed, the reality of how huge this thing actually was beginning to sink in. This would be the most challenging contest he was going to face yet, and he didn't even know the rules. So, he hauled one large backpack over his shoulder, and dragged along a rather large suitcase to the designated check-in area. He quickened his pace a bit, rather excited to find out what would be making this tournament so special. There had been one this that caught his attention in particular: there was only one stadium. It appeared that the island had more training facilities than anything else. Ruby was quite interested as to the reasoning for that, but had to remind himself that it would all be explained once he reached the check-in.Â
Once he did, Ruby realized it wasn't just reaching the check-in that would prove taxing. Waiting in line seemed to be as equally as frustrating. He tapped his foot rather impatiently, ready to just be in his room and know what the heck was going on. His question was answered when a loud buzzing noise rang throughout seemingly the whole island, catching Ruby off guard.Â
"Welcome, trainers and coordinators alike! We are so happy to see each and everyone of you here today. I'm sure you're all wondering why this tournament is so huge. Well, to put it simply, it will be combining a battle league and a contest! Each trainer will have a coordinator partner! These pairs have been randomly assigned. Once you check in, you will find out your partner and be able to meet with them in your room! Further explanation will be given tonight during supper in the dining hall prepared just for this tournament! Thank you for coming, we expect this to be an amazing, if not the best, tournament that Hoenn has ever seen!"
The voice faded, leaving a very confused Ruby to process what he had just herd. It didn't take long, as people around were already buzzing about it. Battles and contests, as one? As soon as the reality set in, Ruby regret the choice to accept the invitation. He would have to battle? The mere thought was repulsive enough to cause a bit of anger to boil up in Ruby's chest. That particular bit of information would have been nice to know before he had accepted. Ruby cursed under his breath, becoming even more anxious to check in than ever.Â
After what felt like hours, Ruby finally made it to the front desk. After giving the poor receptionist a piece of his mind, Ruby was nearly forced to sign the agreement, after the threat of security having to step in being a possibility after Ruby's rudeness. He grumbled the whole time, making more of a scene than needed. But, in the end, Ruby collected his room card and information packet. And, most importantly, the identity of his partner: the one and only; Steven Stone.Â
He knew the name all too well. Memories of the final battle between Teams Aqua and Magma came rushing back, throwing Ruby off balance. Just what he needed. The male stormed down the hallway towards his room, scowling the whole way. Not only would he have to participate in battles, but his partner was the rock dude. Ruby arrived at their room in little time, practically flinging the door open. He threw himself in, ready to engage Steven in conversation. Instead, his mouth fell open.Â
The room was a mess. Bags, books, and even rocks, everywhere. There was even a little Aron snoozing away on one of the beds. And Steven? No where to be found. Ruby cursed under his breath, throwing his bags into a neat pile on the free bed, the only thing in the room that had remained untouched. And, without any warning, Ruby began cleaning. Was it something of disrespect? Probably. Normally, it would be considered rude to move around a roommates' items. But to Ruby, he was doing his roommate a huge favor. Notes were placed inside books, which were stacked neatly onto the desk in alpha order. Clothes were hung into one of the closets, the remaining bags at the bottom. And, finally, the rocks were placed under the bed that Steven had seemingly claimed.
The process, all in all, had taken  no more than half an hour. Ruby was, undoubtedly, a master at cleaning and organization at this point. After the speed cleaning, Ruby turned to look down at the innocent little Aron. A smirk appeared across Ruby's face, and in little time, Aron had received a steel-Pokemon shining, and even a little bow tie to top it all off. Ruby stood in the center of the room, quite proud of himself. His smile probably couldn't get any larger. He had finished just in time, too.
Because the sound of the door unlocking echoed the now spotless room. The coordinator spun on his heels to greet Steven, a grin on his face. Steven would be so grateful. Right?
