StitchFix - A Transmasc Perspective
What is UP my homosexuals? It’s one of my first original posts on this account, and I’m EXCITED. So, a bit about me:
My name is Torrin (he/him). I work in a bike shop. I’m a trans masculine non-binary dude (AFAB for those wondering, relevant later.) I bind and sometimes pack. I am pre-T and pre-ops of any kind. However, I will still rock some high waisted skinny jeans. That style still fucks.
I’m not super out of the closet so my brother is like “hey, yo, I know you suck at dressing yourself and don’t like to try things on (and COVID-19 is a thing) so I signed you up for StitchFix, have fun.”
So I finish my sign up. Super easy and intuitive! $20/month styling fee that goes towards anything you want to buy. You tell them how much you wanna spend on each type of item, enter your sizes, and tell them about your style. Colors, patterns, the works.
I chose to come out to my stylist in a note and emphasized wanting to pull attention away from my chest and hips. I did my little style quiz and stuff and sent off my measurements and waited.
I checked into the app daily and did multiple short “style quizzes” a day. It would present an item or an outfit, and I hit a thumbs up or thumbs down. Over time, I hit more thumbs up than down. It was like Tinder for aesthetics. And I found some DOPE stuff. There’s even an app to make it easy. Y’all. I’m a certifiable dumbass with two brain cells and I could do it.
My first Fix went a little like this:
I just got it today, a day earlier than anticipated! Came by USPS. Snazzy, simple box. Inside was a short guide on the things they sent, a pre-addressed return envelope for things I don’t want to keep, and the clothes were neatly folded. And OOOOOH BOY these pieces. Let’s chat!
First, khaki jeans. Commerce, 29x30. Powell athletic fit jeans. Now. I don’t really do khaki anything. Period. But these were fuckin COMFY. I love them! They were too small (dammit, I’m a 30x30 now...) but these fuck. I love them. I put a note about the size update, but let my stylist know that these are dope. Yeah, hips are still wide, and my waist narrow, so maybe a lower rise will work better. Do love them though. SO CLOSE. 8/10. Cost: $69.50
Second, Even Tide Shor One Pocket Coastal Short Sleeve Shirt. Grey/white/blue plaid. A small size, also short! Length was good but a little boxy. My big-chested trans men (y’all hella valid and I am among you) know plaid is not great, kinda emphasizes the boobs. Throw it open over a white shirt though? It fucks. The one thing I kept from this box. 7/10. Cost: $54.00
Third: Flag & Anthem Gibson Slub One Pocket Polo. Burgundy, small. It was super soft but a little heavy, a lot boxy, and the front pocket hung down really low. Meh. Love the color but not well fitting for me. If it didn’t have the pocket I could MAYBE hem it but... meh. 4/10. Cost: $39.50
TravisMathew Sweet Teets Golf Polo, Navy, Small. Really, it was just long, and had an odd top pattern that drew attention to my larger chest. It was a nice tech fabric that is moisture wicking. Mad love on that end. Polos still aren’t my style though. 4/10. Cost: $85.00
Last, United By Blue SoftHemp Chambray Short Sleeve Button Up shirt, Olive, small. I like the feel of it, but it was way too long. Honestly, gonna change to an XS, which is kinda risky from other clothes I’ve tried on. I also need to cut down my weight because I think that’s the hard part. I LOVED this shirt, but it wasn’t meant to be. 7/10. Cost: $68.00
I thought the cost of clothes was actually fair. Some people may consider it a steep cost, but these were hella high quality clothes, and I really liked them. They were some super solid clothing choices and I really liked the pieces. I didn’t keep anything from this box so I could afford more clothes from my next box. I think the next box will be even better! After each box, you give detailed feedback on the clothes to your stylist. I know my future boxes will be even better. I admit, I was a skeptic, but I concede that I may have misjudged the StitchFix service.
Moral of the story, my thoughts on StitchFix:
Don’t be afraid to catch feels.
